CHAPTER 33: The Subversion of Trust
"Julian, no!" Sarah cried out, but I didn't look back at her.
I walked toward Victor Vance, holding the brass key out between my thumb and forefinger. Eleanor’s eyes glinted with absolute greed as she watched the metal approach.
As Victor reached out to take the key, I dropped it.
The heavy antique brass clattered into the deep puddles of muddy water accumulating on the loading dock floor. Victor frowned, his eyes instinctively dropping to follow the movement of the metal.
In that exact fraction of a second, the loud, dual airhorns of a heavy tactical vehicle shattered the evening air.

A massive, armored SWAT transport vehicle tore through the wooden perimeter fence of the loading dock, its steel ram-bars slamming directly into the front of the two black SUVs, throwing the mercenaries off balance.
"State police! Drop your weapons!" a voice roared through a megaphone. It was Agent Miller, standing in the open hatch of the armored vehicle, holding a tactical rifle pointed directly at Victor Vance’s head.
