The man in the suit stepped forward, adjusting his cufflinks. "My name is Victor Vance. Richard’s older brother, and the managing director of Vanguard Alpha. You have caused a significant disruption to our liquid assets, Mr. Sterling. But you have also brought us the key."

He held out a manicured hand. "Hand over the brass key and step into the vault vehicle. If you cooperate, your wife walks away from this facility alive. If you refuse, my men will dismantle her piece by piece before they finish you."

Sarah gripped my arm, her fingers turning white against my jacket. I could feel the cold titanium of her leg vibrating against my boot. We were entirely outgunned.

"Don't do it, Julian," Arthur whispered weakly from my shoulder. "If they get that ledger, the entire infrastructure of this state falls under their control."

I looked at Eleanor’s smug, triumphant face. She thought she had won again. She thought she had broken us down to our baseline elements.

"Alright," I said loudly, stepping forward. "You win, Victor. Let my wife go, and I’ll open the vault for you."
