CHAPTER 28: The Industrial Lab

We slipped into the mill through a broken ventilation shaft at the rear of the building. The interior smelled of rust, stagnant water, and industrial chemicals. The sound of rain drumming against the corrugated steel roof was deafening, providing the perfect cover for our movements.

We descended a flight of iron stairs into the basement levels. The air grew colder, vibrating with the low hum of a portable diesel generator.

Through a cracked window of an old foreman’s office, we saw him.

Arthur Pendelton was tied to a steel chair beneath a single, flickering lightbulb. He looked emaciated, his suit tattered, but his eyes were wide and defiant. Standing over him were two large men in dark tactical gear, adjusting the straps of a heavy transport crate.

"He’s still alive," I whispered to Sarah, my heart pounding against my ribs.

"We can't take them out in a direct fight," Sarah whispered back, her eyes scanning the room. She pointed to a series of old industrial valves lining the wall behind the guards. "Those are the old chemical steam lines. If we blow the pressure valves, we can blind them."
