CHAPTER 19: The Final Severance

“There is no appeal, Eleanor,” I said softly, my voice carrying a absolute finality that seemed to pierce through her delusion. “Agent Miller’s team found your secondary servers in the warehouse district last week. Your attorneys aren't working on an appeal—they’re currently negotiating their own plea deals to avoid being charged as co-conspirators in the laundering operation.”

The phone in her hand trembled slightly. For a fraction of a second, the mask of defiance slipped, revealing the raw, terrifying isolation of a woman who had alienated every single human soul she had ever touched.

“Harrison won't let me rot in here,” she whispered, her voice suddenly sounding small, like an old woman realizing she’s lost in the dark. “He’s my son. He knows I did it for his future.”

“Harrison changed his last name last Tuesday,” I said, looking her directly in the eyes. “He took his wife’s name. He sold the country club shares he inherited and moved out west. He didn't leave a forwarding address for you, Eleanor. He asked me to tell you that if you ever try to contact him or his children, he will file a permanent restraining order.”

The words hit her like a physical blow. She went completely rigid, her breath hitching in her throat. The last anchor connecting her to the world of the living had just been severed.

“You did this,” she hissed, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper, her eyes turning wild and bloodshot. “You ruined my family. You took my son.”

“You did it to yourself the moment you slammed that door,” I said.

I stood up, holding the phone to my ear for one last second. “Goodbye, Eleanor. I hope the mattress is comfortable.”

I hung up the receiver, turning my back on the plexiglass partition before she could scream. As the heavy steel doors of the visiting room clicked shut behind me, I felt a weight leave my chest that I hadn't even realized I was still carrying. The past was dead, and its warden was locked inside a cage of her own making.
