CHAPTER 23: Return to the Viper's Nest
The next morning, I contacted Agent Miller, but his phone went straight to voicemail. A chill ran down my spine. When I called the main office of the Financial Crimes Division, a bureaucratic voice informed me that Agent Miller had been placed on administrative leave due to a "procedural discrepancy."
The system was bleeding from the inside. The Vanguard Group was already closing its grip around the investigation.
"We have to go back to the club," Sarah said, standing beside me in her new titanium leg. The silver vines on her prosthesis gleamed under the kitchen lights.
"Absolutely not," I said. "The club is a crime scene, or what's left of it. It’s too dangerous, Sarah."

"Julian, look at me," she said, her voice filled with that unbreakable nurse's resolve. "They are dismantling the case against Eleanor. If they wipe the evidence, she walks out of that cell, and we go back to being hunted. We do this together. My leg is functional, and I’m not letting you walk into that viper's nest alone."
We left Clara at the house with our emergency security system activated and drove toward the Oakwood Country Club under the cover of a gray, overcast sky.
