CHAPTER 29: The Steam Screen

I crept along the shadows of the catwalk, reaching the rusty iron wheel of the main pressure valve. It took all my strength to turn it. The metal groaned, and then, with a deafening shriek, a massive cloud of superheated white steam erupted from the pipes, filling the basement room within seconds.

The guards shouted in confusion, their voices muffled by the sudden roar of the escaping pressure.

"Secure the target!" one of them yelled, his footsteps echoing frantically on the concrete.

Sarah moved like a shadow through the white mist. Using the silent, fluid movement of her high-tech prosthesis, she closed the distance between herself and the first guard. Before he could turn his weapon toward the sound, she swept his legs out from under him with her titanium pylon, sending him crashing into the concrete structure of the generator.

I jumped from the catwalk, landing squarely on the second guard’s back, driving him into the floor as the steam swirled around us.
