CHAPTER 27: Driving into the Storm

The rain was a solid wall of water as our car tore down the highway toward the state line. Sarah was mapping the coordinates of the abandoned textile mill on her phone, her fingers flying across the screen.

"I called Miller’s personal emergency line," she said over the roar of the storm. "I left a encrypted audio file of Vance’s confession. If Miller is still loyal, he’ll see it."

"And if he isn't?" I asked, gripping the steering wheel as the car hydroplaned slightly.

"Then we are the only line of defense Arthur has left," she said.

We pulled off the highway onto a muddy, unpaved road surrounded by dense pine woods. In the distance, the rusted silhouette of the textile mill rose like a jagged tooth against the gray horizon. Two black SUVs were parked outside the main loading dock, their engines idling, exhaust smoke blending with the heavy fog.
