CHAPTER 31: The Ambush at the Loading Dock

We supported Arthur between the two of us, moving quickly back up the stairs toward the loading dock. The air was clearing, the storm outside slowing to a steady, rhythmic drizzle.

But as we reached the exit doors, the bright halogen headlights of three more vehicles illuminated the interior of the warehouse, blinding us completely.

"Step away from the old man, Julian," a cold, smooth voice echoed from the glare.

The headlights cut through the gloom, revealing a tall man in a bespoke Italian suit, surrounded by four heavily armed mercenaries. Beside him, leaning against the hood of a black sedan, was Eleanor Sterling.

She was wearing a standard orange transport jumpsuit under a heavy wool coat, her wrists bound by a light transport chain. She was smiling—that same cruel, vindictive, arrogant smile that she had worn through the glass panels of the country club.

"Did you really think a federal cell could hold me for more than a month, you pathetic little rat?" Eleanor spat, her voice echoing off the steel beams. "Meet Mr. Vance’s international associates. The real owners of the Sterling fortune."
