Chapter 16

CHAPTER 17: The Unbroken Cadence

We stayed by the lake until the sun slipped completely beneath the tree line, leaving the sky in a deep twilight blue. As we turned back toward the car to head home, I realized that I no longer cared about the Sterling name, the corporate boardrooms, or the massive iron gates of my father’s old mansion.

I cared about the person walking beside me. I cared about the steady, rhythmic sound of her steps on the gravel—a sound that used to represent her struggle, but now represented our survival.

The door was closed on the past, permanently locked by the hands of justice. And for the first time in five long years, I didn't look back at the shadows to see if someone was following us. I didn't check the rearview mirror for black SUVs.

We drove home under a vast sky full of bright stars, the headlights cutting a clean path through the quiet night. The road ahead was completely, perfectly clear. The legacy of my father hadn't been destroyed by Eleanor’s greed or exposed by a hidden USB drive. It had been purified, handed over to the people who knew that the greatest wealth isn't what you take from the world, but what you refuse to let it break.

And finally, beautifully, we were free.
