Chapter 9 - The Serpent’s Final Bite

The air inside the living room instantly turned frigid. Robert took the yellow legal document from Evelyn’s hands, his eyes scanning the court filing with terrifying speed.

"Embezzled corporate funds?" I repeated, my voice rising in disbelief. "That penthouse was bought eight years ago as part of our divorce settlement! Robert transferred the title to Chloe on her eighteenth birthday!"

"I know, Sarah," Evelyn said calmly, though her eyes were deeply concerned. "But Victoria’s lead attorney is Richard Sterling—the most corrupt corporate fixer in the southern district. He found an old, obscure financial loan document from 2018 signed by Robert’s former offshore holding firm. They are alleging that the money used to buy the penthouse was tied to an unpaid corporate debt owed to a company Victoria’s family secretly acquired last month."

Chloe pulled her blanket tighter around her shoulders, her face pale with renewed panic. "They're still trying to take it... even from a prison cell, she’s still trying to steal my home."

"She isn't just trying to steal your home, Chloe," Robert said, his voice dropping into a register so dark it sent a shiver through the room. "Victoria knows she is going to prison for twenty years. She doesn't care about the condo anymore. She is doing this to humiliate us one last time, to prove that even in defeat, she can make us bleed."

Robert tossed the legal paper onto the table, turning to Evelyn. "When is the emergency asset forfeiture hearing?"

"Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM," Evelyn replied. "Judge Harold Vance presiding."

I gasped. "Harold Vance?! Robert... isn't that your estranged older brother?"

Robert’s mouth tightened into a hard, bitter line. "Yes."

The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. Harold Vance was a senior federal judge known throughout Florida for his uncompromising, icy demeanor. But more importantly, Harold and Robert had not spoken a single word to each other in over twelve years, ever since a vicious inheritance dispute tore the Vance family business apart. Harold loathed Robert, viewing him as an arrogant, ruthless businessman who ruined everything he touched.

"Victoria’s lawyer specifically maneuvered the motion onto Harold’s emergency docket," Evelyn explained, looking at Robert with deep concern. "Sterling knows Harold hates you, Robert. Sterling is betting that Harold will use this opportunity to strip the asset away just to spite you."

"Can we request a recusal?" I asked frantically. "He’s family! It’s a complete conflict of interest!"

"If we request a recusal, the asset remains frozen under court order for six to eight months while the motion is reassigned," Evelyn shook her head. "During that time, Victoria’s offshore creditors can place liens on the property. We have to fight this tomorrow morning in Harold’s courtroom, or Chloe loses the penthouse forever."

Robert stood still for a long moment, looking out at the Miami skyline. Then, he slowly picked up his dark suit jacket from the chair.

"Where are you going?" I asked, stepping in front of him.

"I have to make a visit," Robert said quietly.

"To Harold?" I asked in shock. "Robert, he won't even open the door for you!"

"He will open the door for his niece," Robert said, looking down at Chloe.

Chloe looked up, her eyes wide with fear. "Dad... I don't want to beg a judge who hates us."

Robert walked over, kneeling beside her once again. "You aren't going to beg, Chloe. You are going to stand tall in that courtroom tomorrow with your head held high, showing every single person in Miami that you are a Vance. And I am going to face my brother for the first time in twelve years—not as a businessman, but as a father asking for justice."

At 8:00 PM that evening, a heavy rainstorm beat against the windows of a quiet, historic mansion in Coral Gables. Robert and I stood on the wide covered porch. Robert reached out his hand and pressed the door chime.

A minute later, the heavy oak door opened.

Standing in the entryway was Judge Harold Vance. He wore a simple cardigan sweater, his silver hair neatly styled, his face lined with age and stern authority. His sharp eyes locked onto Robert, and his expression instantly transformed into a mask of pure, bitter frost.

"You have five seconds to turn around and leave my property, Robert," Harold said, his voice cold and cutting. "Before I have the federal marshals arrest you for attempting to influence a sitting judge."

"I'm not here as a litigant, Harold," Robert said, his voice surprisingly humble, his posture completely undefended. "I'm here as your younger brother."

Harold let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "I don't have a brother. My brother died twelve years ago when he stole our father's legacy."

"Take my legacy, then!" Robert suddenly shouted over the sound of the thunder, taking a step forward. "Take every company I own! Take every dollar in my bank accounts, take my name, take everything! I don't care about any of it anymore!"

Harold froze, caught completely off guard by the raw, uncharacteristic desperation in Robert’s voice.

Robert’s eyes filled with hot, furious tears as he looked his older brother in the eye. "They beat my daughter, Harold. They held her down in a hotel suite on her wedding night and beat her forty times to steal her home. I am not asking you to break the law tomorrow. I am asking you to look at the evidence as a human being, and help me protect my child."
