Chapter 20 - The Final Price of Blood

At 3:30 AM, the heavy sea rain pounded against the runway asphalt of a private executive airfield in Fort Lauderdale. A small, sleek gulfstream jet sat on the tarmac, its engines whining softly as technicians completed pre-flight checks.

A black armored transport van pulled up next to the aircraft staircase. Four heavily armed federal marshals stepped out, surrounding Evelyn Ward. Evelyn wore civilian clothes, her hair neatly styled again, carrying a small leather bag. She looked relieved, a subtle, arrogant smile touching her lips as she prepared to board the plane that would take her to a new life under a new identity.

She walked up the metal staircase, stopping at the top platform to look back at the dark Miami skyline one last time.

"Goodbye, Robert," Evelyn whispered to herself with a quiet, triumphant chuckle. "In the end, the lawyer always wins."

Suddenly, the driver’s side door of a sleek black sedan parked near the hangar opened.

Robert Vance stepped out into the pouring rain. He wore a heavy black trench coat, holding a simple black umbrella. He walked slowly onto the tarmac, stopping twenty yards from the base of the jet staircase.

The federal marshals immediately placed their hands on their holstered weapons. "Sir! Stand back! This is a restricted federal transport zone!"

Evelyn’s smile instantly froze when she saw Robert standing in the rain. Her face drained of color as she gripped the airplane handrail. "Robert... what are you doing here?"

Robert didn't look at the marshals. He looked straight up at Evelyn, his voice carrying clearly over the roar of the jet engines and the pounding rain.

"Did you really think it was over, Evelyn?" Robert called out calmly.

"I have federal immunity, Robert!" Evelyn shouted down, trying to sound brave, though her voice quivered with sudden panic. "The Department of Justice signed my protection agreement! There is nothing you or your money can do to me anymore! I won!"

Robert took a slow step forward, resting his hands on his umbrella handle. "I didn't come here to stop you, Evelyn. I came to deliver a package."

Robert gestured to Marcus, who stepped out from the passenger side of the sedan holding a thick red folder. Marcus walked up to the lead federal marshal, handing him the folder along with an official court order.

The lead marshal opened the folder, scanned the documents under his flashlight, and his face instantly hardened. He looked up at Evelyn on the staircase.

"Agent! What is that?!" Evelyn screamed from the platform, terror surging through her veins. "What is he giving you?!"

The lead marshal closed the folder, looking up at her with complete coldness. "Evelyn Ward. The Department of Justice just revoked your federal witness immunity agreement."

Evelyn gasped, nearly losing her balance on the stairs. "WHAT?! Why?! On what grounds?!"

"On the grounds of un-disclosed foreign financial assets," Robert called out from the rain, his voice cold as ice. "Ten minutes ago, my team submitted evidence to the federal magistrate proving that you kept three secret offshore accounts in Panama containing twelve million dollars stolen from your South American clients. You violated the fundamental terms of your full disclosure agreement."

"No... NO! THAT’S A LIE!" Evelyn shrieked, frantically trying to rush inside the airplane cabin.

"MARSHALS! SECURE THE DETAINEE!" the lead marshal ordered sharply.

Two marshals immediately rushed up the metal stairs, grabbing Evelyn by her arms, dragging her back down the staircase kicking and screaming hysterically as heavy steel handcuffs clicked over her wrists once again.

Evelyn was forced down onto her knees in the cold, wet tarmac right at Robert’s feet. Rain streamed down her face, ruining her hair, her eyes wide with frantic, breathless terror as she looked up at the man she had betrayed.

"Robert! Please!" Evelyn begged, crying hysterically, all her legal arrogance completely destroyed. "Don't do this! If I go to a state prison without federal protection, my former clients will kill me! They'll slaughter me!"

Robert slowly lowered his umbrella, leaning down until his face was only inches from hers.

"You should have thought about that before you gave them the key to my daughter's room, Evelyn," Robert whispered, his words cutting through her soul like a razor blade. "You traded Chloe’s blood for money. Now, you pay the interest."

Robert stood up smoothly, turning his back on her as the marshals dragged the screaming, sobbing woman toward a state police cruiser pulling up to the tarmac with flashing lights.

I stepped out from the sedan, walking up to Robert’s side in the rain. I wrapped my arm through his, resting my head against his shoulder as we watched the police car drive away into the stormy night.

"Is it finally over now, my love?" I asked softly.

May you like

Robert looked down at me, his eyes filled with absolute peace, love, and unwavering devotion. He wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close against his chest as the storm began to fade over the ocean.

"Yes, Sarah," Robert said, kissing my forehead as the morning sun began to break through the dark clouds on the horizon. "It’s over. Our daughter is safe, our enemies are gone, and our family is finally home."
