Chapter 13 - The Web of Betrayal

The panic inside the Biltmore Hotel’s grand ballroom erupted into complete bedlam. High-profile investors hurriedly pulled their commitment signatures from the registration desk, municipal city council members quietly slipped out through emergency exits to distance themselves, and reporters from local business journals rushed forward with flashing cameras.

Julian Vance stood frozen on the stage steps, staring up at the giant screen displaying his private Cayman Islands bank records. Sweat rolled down his temples, ruining his manicured appearance.

"This is a malicious hack! A high-tech smear campaign!" Julian screamed into the nearby podium microphone, his voice echoing hysterically through the sound system. "Robert Vance is an unhinged, vengeful ex-businessman trying to destroy this city’s progress out of personal jealousy!"

Two uniformed police officers, accompanied by two state financial investigators, marched rapidly through the ballroom doors.

"Julian Vance?" the lead investigator called out, pulling an official warrant from his coat. "You are under active investigation for commercial bribery, conspiracy to commit extortion, and corporate fraud tied to the Dudley syndicate. You need to come with us for questioning."

The crowd parted like the Red Sea as the officers walked up to the stage, placing their hands on Julian’s arms. Julian didn't fight physically, but as the officers turned him around, his eyes locked onto Robert with pure, unadulterated venom.

"You think this saves your daughter, Robert?!" Julian spat bitterly as he was escorted past us. "You think you're the hero here?! I was just the financier! You have no idea who actually authorized Victoria to use physical force on Chloe!"

Robert stopped dead in his tracks. His jaw clenched tight, his hand gripping the edge of a nearby table so hard the wood groaned under the pressure. "What did you say?"

Julian let out a cold, manic laugh as the officers led him toward the exit. "Ask yourself why Victoria knew the exact layout of Chloe’s suite! Ask yourself who gave Lewis the master key-card to the private elevator! Victoria didn't steal that key, Robert! It was given to her by someone inside your own inner circle!"

The words hung in the air like a poisonous fog.

I felt a sudden, icy chill settle deep into my bones. I looked at Robert, whose eyes had turned terrifyingly dark.

"Inner circle?" I whispered, my voice shaking. "Robert... who else knew about the penthouse layout? Who else had access to the private security pass codes for Chloe’s wedding suite?"

Robert didn't answer immediately. He slowly turned his head to look at Evelyn Ward, who was standing quietly near the edge of the stage, reviewing her tablet screen.

"Evelyn," Robert said softly, his voice dangerously measured.

Evelyn looked up, her expression calm, professional, and unreadable. "Yes, Robert?"

"Who managed the private security arrangements for Chloe’s wedding hotel suite last week?" Robert asked.

"Marcus and his team handled the outer perimeter," Evelyn answered smoothly. "And my office handled the high-level VIP access list for the bridal floor."

"Show me the master VIP access log," Robert ordered.

Evelyn hesitated for a split second—a microsecond delay that would have gone unnoticed by anyone else. But to Robert, a man who had spent forty years reading human deception in corporate negotiations, that tiny delay was louder than a cannon shot.

Evelyn slowly tapped her tablet screen and handed it to Robert.

Robert scrolled through the digital access timestamps from the night of the wedding. His finger stopped at 11:42 PM—precisely eighteen minutes before Victoria Dudley walked into Chloe's suite with her six syndicate women.

The log entry read: Master Override Security Keycard #04 – Issued by: Ward Legal Group.

Robert looked up from the tablet screen. The silence between him and his trusted attorney of fifteen years was so heavy it felt like it was crushing the breath out of my lungs.

"Evelyn..." I gasped, backing away from her in utter disbelief and horror. "You? You gave them the key to my daughter's room?!"

Evelyn didn't run. She didn't scream. She slowly closed her leather folder, took a deep breath, and looked at Robert with a mixture of cold cynicism and profound exhaustion.

"You were always blind when it came to family, Robert," Evelyn said quietly, her voice losing its warm, professional tone, replaced by an icy, calculated edge. "Julian offered my firm a ten percent equity stake in the three-hundred-million-dollar downtown redevelopment. Do you have any idea how many years I spent cleaning up your dirty corporate messes for a flat hourly fee?"

"I trusted you with my life," Robert whispered, his voice cracking with a painful, agonizing betrayal that cut deeper than any attack from Julian or Victoria. "I trusted you with my daughter’s safety."

"Business is business, Robert," Evelyn said coldly, turning toward the private side exit of the ballroom where a black sedan was waiting outside with its engine idling. "You taught me that yourself fifteen years ago."

She turned to walk away, but before she could take two steps, Marcus’s towering frame blocked the doorway completely, his dark eyes fixed on her with absolute deadliness.

"Step aside, Marcus," Evelyn commanded sharply. "I am still your legal counsel."

"You were his legal counsel," Marcus said in a deep, gravelly tone. "Now you're just evidence."
