Chapter 16 - The Italian Magnate

At 2:00 PM sharp, the high-rise conference room on the 40th floor of Vance International overlooked the glittering turquoise waters of Biscayne Bay. The long mahogany table was set with pristine leather folders, crystal water carafes, and private financial briefs.

The heavy double doors opened, and Marcus escorted Mateo Rossi inside.

Mateo Rossi was sixty years old, strikingly handsome with silver-streaked hair, wearing a custom-tailored dark navy Italian suit. He didn't carry an army of lawyers or security guards. He walked into the room accompanied only by a single, sharp-looking female executive assistant carrying a thin leather briefcase.

Mateo had a powerful, commanding aura, but his eyes were surprisingly warm and highly observant as he walked into the room.

Robert stood at the head of the table, shaking Mateo’s hand with firm, mutual respect. "Mr. Rossi. Welcome to Miami."

"Thank you, Robert," Mateo said, his voice deep with a smooth, refined Italian accent. He turned his gaze toward me, bowing his head respectfully. "Mrs. Vance."

Then, Mateo turned to look at Chloe, who stood tall next to her father, wearing an immaculate black business suit, her hair styled back, her posture proud and unyielding.

Mateo looked at her for a long, quiet moment, his expression softening into profound respect. He walked over, extending his hand gently toward her. "Miss Chloe Vance. It is a genuine honor to meet you."

Chloe shook his hand firmly. "Mr. Rossi."

They all took their seats around the glass table.

"I will be direct with you, Robert," Mateo began, leaning back in his chair, folding his hands over his knee. "Six months ago, my international firm invested eighty-four million dollars into land parcels surrounding the proposed Vance Plaza project. We were told by Julian Vance and Evelyn Ward that the commercial ground leases were fully secured and ready for development."

Mateo’s eyes turned cold as he mentioned Julian’s name. "I was lied to. I did not know that Julian was attempting to illegally extort a young woman through a criminal syndicate of sociopaths."

"When did you find out?" I asked quietly.

"Three days ago, when the federal indictments were broadcast in New York," Mateo answered truthfully. "I immediately fired my North American advisory board and took personal control of the file. I came here today not to threaten you, but to apologize on behalf of my firm for unknowingly funding land acquisitions tied to such disgusting individuals."

The room went quiet. I looked at Robert, who was analyzing Mateo with intense scrutiny.

"Apologies are rare in our line of work, Mateo," Robert said calmly. "But eighty-four million dollars is still sitting on the line. What is your proposal regarding Chloe's penthouse veto right?"

Mateo smiled softly, looking directly at Chloe. "I am a traditional man, Miss Vance. I built my fortune on honor and solid partnerships. I know that Julian Vance tried to steal your veto right to force a multi-million-dollar buyout."

Mateo nodded to his assistant, who opened her briefcase and placed an elegant leather contract in front of Chloe.

"I am offering you a direct fifty-fifty joint venture partnership in the commercial development project," Mateo proposed smoothly. "Your residential veto right will be converted into a non-dilutable fifteen percent equity stake in the entire three-hundred-million-dollar Vance Plaza development."

I gasped under my breath. A fifteen percent equity stake meant Chloe would personally own over forty-five million dollars in commercial assets!

"Why offer her equity instead of buying out her lease veto?" Robert asked, his eyes narrowing slightly.

Mateo looked Robert dead in the eye. "Because your daughter proved she cannot be bought, beaten, or intimidated, Robert. In my country, that is the exact kind of partner you build an empire with."

Chloe looked down at the contract, her fingers tracing the golden embossing on the cover. Then, she looked up at Mateo Rossi, her expression cool, calculated, and sharp.

"I have three conditions, Mr. Rossi," Chloe said firmly.

Mateo raised an eyebrow, visibly impressed by her immediate composure. "Name them, Miss Vance."

"First," Chloe stated, "the project name Vance Plaza will be permanently scrapped. It will be renamed The Sarah Vance Center, in honor of my mother who saved my life."

I covered my mouth, tears instantly filling my eyes as I stared at my daughter in absolute awe.

"Second," Chloe continued without missing a beat, "five percent of all annual commercial profits from the development will be permanently funneled into a private trust foundation to help victims of domestic violence and human trafficking in South Florida."

"And third?" Mateo asked, a brilliant, approving smile spreading across his face.

Chloe leaned forward, looking Mateo dead in the eye. "My father, Robert Vance, will be named Chief Managing Officer of the entire construction phase."

Mateo let out a loud, delighted laugh, slamming his hand on the table in absolute joy. "Magnificent! Absolutely magnificent! You don't just inherit blood, Robert—you inherit a lioness!"

Mateo pulled a gold fountain pen from his pocket and signed the contract on the spot. "Agreed on all terms, partner."
