Chapter 8 - Shadows of the Mind

Three days had passed since the explosive midnight raid on the Belmont estate. The media coverage across the country was relentless. Front-page headlines everywhere blared: "FLORIDA HIGH-SOCIETY MARRIAGE SYNDICATE CRIPPLED BY FEDERAL RACKETEERING INDICTMENT." Photos of Victoria Dudley, Lewis Dudley, and Eleanor Belmont in orange prison jumpsuits were broadcast on every news channel twenty-four hours a day.
Despite our absolute victory over our enemies, inside my high-rise apartment, the atmosphere remained somber and quiet.
Chloe was physically healing. The dark bruises on her face had faded into soft yellow marks, and the stitches inside her lip were healing well. But the psychological damage ran far deeper than any broken bone or torn silk gown.
She spent most of her days sitting by the floor-to-ceiling balcony windows, wrapped in a heavy white blanket, staring blankly out at the ocean. She barely spoke, barely ate, and every time a door shut too loudly or a phone chimed, her entire body would violently flinch.
Robert had moved into the guest room of my apartment, refusing to leave Chloe’s side even for an hour. The man who used to spend eighteen hours a day in corporate boardrooms was now sitting quietly on the living room floor, reading books or simply keeping watch while our daughter slept.
At 2:00 PM on Thursday afternoon, I sat beside Chloe on the sofa, placing a warm cup of chamomile tea on the table next to her.
"How are you feeling today, sweetheart?" I asked gently, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.
Chloe didn't turn her head. She kept her eyes fixed on the distant horizon. "I feel empty, Mom," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Every time I close my eyes, I hear the sound of those women laughing. I hear Lewis’s voice outside the hotel door... telling his mother not to hit my face."
Tears welled up in her eyes, rolling slowly down her bruised cheeks. "How could I have been so blind? I gave him my whole heart. I trusted him with my life."
Robert stepped out of the kitchen, carrying a small leather-bound photo album. He walked over and sat on the coffee table directly in front of Chloe, placing the album on her lap.
"Look at this, Chloe," Robert said softly.
Chloe slowly opened the album. Inside were old, faded photographs from fifteen years ago—photos of Robert holding her on his shoulders at the beach, photos of us laughing together at a birthday party before our messy divorce tore our family apart.
"You weren't blind, Chloe," Robert said, his voice deep and full of profound regret. "You were filled with love and trust. Those are good, beautiful qualities. Lewis and his mother were cold, calculating predators who exploited your goodness. That is not your fault. It is theirs."
Robert reached out, taking her hands in his. "If anyone in this room is to blame for trusting the wrong people, it’s me. I left you and your mother ten years ago because I allowed my pride and ambition to blind me to what truly mattered. I let monsters into your world because I wasn't there to guard the door."
Chloe looked up at her father, her eyes searching his face. "You came back, Dad. You saved me."
"I will never leave again, baby girl," Robert said fiercely, tears glistening in his own eyes—something I had never seen in thirty years of knowing him. "Never."
Suddenly, the front door lock clicked, and Evelyn Ward walked inside, her expression unusually tense. She carried a thick yellow legal folder under her arm.
I stood up immediately, sensing danger. "Evelyn? What is it? Is there a problem with the bail hearings?"
Evelyn looked at Robert, then at Chloe, her mouth drawn into a tight, serious line. "Victoria Dudley just made a deal with the state prosecutor from inside her detention cell."
Robert stood up instantly, his cold, lethal aura returning in a heartbeat. "What kind of deal?"
"She offered to turn state's evidence against Eleanor Belmont in exchange for a reduced sentence," Evelyn revealed, opening the yellow folder. "But that isn't the problem."
"Then what is?" I asked, my heart pounding against my ribs.

Evelyn pulled out a copy of a legal motion. "Victoria’s legal defense team just filed an emergency motion claiming that Chloe's two-million-dollar penthouse was actually purchased using embezzled corporate funds belonging to a ghost company tied to your ex-husband, Robert."
Evelyn looked straight at Robert. "They are attempting to freeze Chloe’s penthouse under federal asset forfeiture laws before we can officially transfer it back into her name."
