Chapter 14 - The Viper’s Nest

By 1:00 AM, the private conference room at the downtown police precinct felt like an interrogation cell. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting harsh white glare over the metal table where Evelyn Ward sat in handcuffs. Her expensive cream suit was rumpled, her silver hair unkempt, but her eyes retained the sharp, dangerous intellect of a seasoned legal operative.

Robert and I stood on the other side of the double-paned observation mirror alongside Detective Miller.

"She’s not talking," Detective Miller said, tossing a folder onto the counter. "Her defense attorney is invoking full attorney-client privilege regarding her past communications with Julian Vance and Victoria Dudley. Unless we can break her financial trail, she’ll post bond by noon tomorrow."

"She won't post bond," Robert said quietly, his face devoid of emotion.

I looked at him, concerned by the terrifying calm that had taken over his persona since leaving the Biltmore Hotel. "Robert, what are you planning?"

"Evelyn spent fifteen years designing my corporate defensive structures, Sarah," Robert explained, his voice low and steady. "She knows every legal loophole in the state. But she forgot one critical thing."

"What’s that?" Detective Miller asked.

"She used my firm's private encrypted server network to process her offshore equity transfer agreements with Julian," Robert said, pulling a sleek black USB drive from his pocket. "She thought she deleted the audit trails three days ago. She didn't realize that my system generates a permanent secondary shadow archive every night at midnight."

Detective Miller’s eyes lit up. "You have the direct digital paper trail linking her to the extortion conspiracy?"

"I have everything," Robert said, handing the USB drive to the detective. "Bank routing numbers, recorded phone calls between her and Victoria, and the explicit contract where Julian promised her thirty million dollars once Chloe signed over the penthouse deed."

Detective Miller took the drive, nodding deeply. "That changes everything. That’s felony corporate conspiracy, official misconduct, and treasonous facilitation of felony battery. She’s not getting out on bond. She’s looking at twenty-five years in maximum security."

Ten minutes later, the door to the interrogation room opened. Robert walked inside alone. He sat down across from Evelyn, placing his hands flat on the metal table.

Evelyn looked up at him, her lips curling into a bitter, tired smile. "Are you here to gloat, Robert? To tell me how foolish I was to cross the great Robert Vance?"

"No," Robert said softly, his voice surprisingly gentle, which seemed to startle her more than shouting would have. "I'm here to ask you why."

Evelyn laughed bitterly, shaking her handcuffed wrists. "Why? Because I spent fifteen years watching you make hundreds of millions of dollars while I sat in courtrooms fighting your battles, getting paid like a servant! I built your empire, Robert! When you divorced Sarah, I was the one who hid your assets! When your brother sued you, I was the one who broke his spirit in court!"

"And when my daughter was beaten bloody in a hotel room," Robert added quietly, "you were the one who handed them the key."

Evelyn’s smile faded, a rare flick of genuine shame passing through her eyes before she buried it under a cold mask. "I didn't know Victoria was going to hit her, Robert. Julian told me they were just going to present the legal documents and intimidate her into signing. I didn't know Victoria was a sadistic animal."

"It doesn't matter what you knew, Evelyn," Robert said, standing up from the chair. "You put my child in harm's way for money. You traded Chloe's blood for thirty million dollars."

Evelyn looked up at him, her eyes narrowing. "You think you've won because you caught me and Julian? The Vance Plaza project was backed by people far bigger than Julian, Robert. Foreign investors who have already poured eighty million dollars into land acquisitions surrounding that financial district. They won't just sit back and let a twenty-two-year-old girl hold their investment hostage with a residential veto right."

Robert stopped at the door, leaning his hand against the frame. He turned back to look at her one last time.

"Tell your foreign investors to bring everything they have, Evelyn," Robert said, his voice ringing with absolute, terrifying power. "Because after what you people did to my daughter, I am going to buy every single asset they own in this state and burn their investments to the ground."
