Chapter 5 - The Shadow Syndicate

The news of the Dudley family's dramatic arrest at the Grand Plaza Hotel spread across Miami like a wildfire fueled by gasoline. By 1:00 PM, every local television station was broadcasting high-resolution images of Victoria Dudley being led away in handcuffs, her expensive blonde hair disheveled, her face twisted in rage as reporters shoved microphones into her face.

Inside my high-rise apartment, the atmosphere was quiet, but heavy. Chloe was resting in the master bedroom under the care of a private nurse, her face still heavily bandaged. Robert sat at my dining room table surrounded by laptop screens, legal files, and empty coffee cups.

Evelyn Ward was on speakerphone. "The judge set bail for Victoria at two million dollars and Lewis at one million. Victoria’s lawyers are already trying to post bail using her grand estate in Coral Gables."

Robert took a slow sip of black coffee, his expression unreadable. "They won't be able to."

"Why?" I asked, looking up from my laptop.

"Because three hours ago, I bought the primary mortgage on her Coral Gables estate from the holding bank," Robert replied coldly. "I declared a technical default based on her public criminal indictment. As of twenty minutes ago, her house is in active foreclosure. She has no real estate assets left to post for bond."

I looked at my ex-husband with a mixture of awe and fear. "Robert... you bought her mortgage in three hours?"

"Money moves fast when you don't care how much it costs to destroy someone," he said simply.

Suddenly, the apartment intercom chimed softly. Marcus, the security chief stationed in the hallway, walked inside. His face was unusually serious. "Boss, we have a situation downstairs."

Robert’s eyes narrowed. "Did Lewis’s attorneys show up?"

"No," Marcus said, placing a heavy, wax-sealed black envelope on the table. "A black sedan pulled up to the private parking garage five minutes ago. A driver dropped this off specifically for you. No return address, but the wax seal belongs to the Belmont Group."

The room went completely still. Even Evelyn fell silent over the phone.

I frowned, looking between Robert and Evelyn. "What is the Belmont Group?"

Robert’s hands tightened around his coffee cup. "The women who helped Victoria in the suite last night... Chloe said there were six other women present, laughing while Victoria hit her."

"Who are they?" I demanded, my heart beginning to throb in my chest.

"They aren't just Victoria’s country club friends, Sarah," Robert said, his voice dropping into a dark, dangerous whisper. "The Belmont Group is an exclusive, highly secretive syndicate of high-society matriarchs in South Florida. They use their sons and daughters to orchestrate marriages with wealthy, unsuspecting young heirs, systematically strip their pre-nuptial assets through psychological abuse and legal manipulation, and split the profits among their private offshore accounts."

My breath caught in my throat. "So... Chloe wasn't just an isolated victim?"

"Chloe was a target," Robert said bitterly. "Victoria was just the executioner."

Robert slowly picked up the silver letter opener and sliced open the black envelope. Inside was a single piece of heavy parchment paper with elegant calligraphy written in red ink:

Mr. Vance,

You have made a very loud, very foolish scene today. Victoria Dudley was careless, but she belongs to us. If you do not withdraw all criminal charges, drop the financial foreclosures, and release Lewis Dudley by 8:00 PM tonight, the private surveillance video recorded inside your daughter's suite last night will be leaked to every major dark-web forum and tabloid outlet in the world. Let us see if your daughter's reputation can survive what we captured.

– The Belmont Circle

A horrific, suffocating chill settled over the living room. I felt my knees go weak, and I had to grab the edge of the dining table to keep from falling.

"They filmed it..." I gasped, tears instantly springing to my eyes as absolute terror seized my heart. "The six women... they were recording what they did to my baby?!"

Robert didn't panic. He didn't shout. He slowly read the letter a second time, his face turning into a mask of pure, murderous intent.

"Evelyn," Robert said softly into the speakerphone.

"I'm here, Robert," Evelyn answered, her voice cold as steel.

"Cancel the annulment paperwork for now," Robert ordered.

I spun around to face him, horrified. "What?! Robert, no! We need to free Chloe from that monster!"

Robert looked up at me, his eyes burning with an ancient, terrifying fire that made the room feel ice-cold. "An annulment means we walk away and let the court handle it, Sarah. We aren't walking away anymore."

He turned back to Marcus. "Tell the tactical team to assemble in the basement garage. Call our contacts at the Federal Bureau of Investigation's cyber-crime division. And get me the private address of Eleanor Belmont."

May you like

"Eleanor Belmont?" I asked, my voice shaking. "Who is she?"

"She is the president of the Belmont Group," Robert said, pulling a black semi-automatic pistol from a hidden leather holster beneath his jacket and checking the chamber with a sharp CLICK. "And tonight, she is going to learn why nobody threatens my blood."
