Chapter 12 - Ghosts of the Biltmore

Z

The grand ballroom of the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables radiated opulent elegance. Massive crystal chandeliers hung from high vaulted ceilings, casting warm gold light across hundreds of South Florida’s most influential developers, politicians, and corporate tycoons. Tuxedos, silk evening gowns, and flowing champagne created an atmosphere of effortless power.

At the center of the main stage stood a massive backdrop displaying a 3D digital rendering of the proposed downtown financial district—a towering, multi-billion-dollar project titled The Vance Plaza.

Standing near the stage, surrounded by city council members and wealthy investors, was Julian Vance. He was fifty-five years old, impeccably groomed, wearing a midnight-blue tuxedo and silver cuff links. He held a glass of vintage champagne, laughing charmingly as he accepted congratulations from the crowd.

I walked through the double doors of the ballroom wearing an elegant crimson dress, my chin held high, stepping rhythmically beside Robert. Robert looked imposing in a black tuxedo, his graying hair styled perfectly back, his presence commanding immediate attention from everyone in the room. Behind us walked Evelyn Ward and Marcus, quietly positioning themselves near the perimeter exit doors.

As we walked through the crowd, whispers began to ripple across the ballroom like shockwaves.

"Is that Robert Vance?"

"What is he doing here?"

"Isn't he the father of the girl involved in that terrible Belmont syndicate story?"

Julian was mid-sentence, laughing with a city commissioner, when his eyes caught Robert’s approach. His smooth, charming smile instantly faltered for a microsecond before he recovered his composure, handing his champagne glass to a passing waiter.

"Robert," Julian said loudly, opening his arms as if greeting a long-lost brother, attempting to control the room before a scene could develop. "What an absolute surprise! I didn't expect to see you at the gala tonight after... well, after the terrible ordeal your poor daughter went through recently."

The surrounding crowd went quiet, sensing the sudden tension between the two powerful men.

Robert stopped three feet from Julian. He didn't offer a handshake. His eyes were cold, penetrating, and unyielding.

"Chloe is recovering, Julian," Robert said, his deep voice carrying easily to the surrounding circles of guests. "Thank you for asking. Although I am sure you already knew her condition, given how closely you were monitoring her suite."

Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly, a subtle twitch appearing near his jawline. "I have no idea what you are implying, Robert. The news about Victoria Dudley and her insane syndicate was horrifying to us all. My heart breaks for Chloe, truly."

"Does your heart break for the five-million-dollar wire transfer you promised Lewis Dudley, Julian?" I asked, stepping up right beside Robert, staring Julian down with absolute contempt.

A collective gasp echoed among the nearby city officials.

Julian’s face stiffened, his aristocratic calm beginning to crack around the edges. "Sarah... please. You are clearly emotional and distraught from recent trauma. This is a private corporate event, not a forum for ridiculous family gossip."

"This isn't family gossip, Julian," Evelyn Ward said, stepping out from the crowd holding a sealed white envelope containing court-stamped subpoenas. "This is a formal service of process."

Julian flinched backward as Evelyn placed the envelope directly into his hands.

"What is this nonsense?!" Julian hissed under his breath, dropping his fake friendly smile completely as his voice turned sharp and bitter.

"That is a emergency injunction filed directly with the State Division of Land Records," Evelyn explained in a clear, loud voice that resonated across the quieted ballroom. "Regarding Property Asset 402—the penthouse owned by Chloe Vance. As the sole owner of the primary residential veto right, Chloe has officially executed a total, non-negotiable blockade against the commercial development of The Vance Plaza."

Julian’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "She... she can't do that! That project is a three-hundred-million-dollar municipal development!"

"She just did," Robert said, stepping closer, his voice dropping into a dark, lethal register. "You thought you could use Victoria Dudley as your attack dog while you kept your hands clean in a tuxedo. You thought my daughter was weak enough to be broken by a night of violence."

Julian leaned in, his face darkening with genuine malice, dropping all pretenses of innocence. "You always were an arrogant bastard, Robert," Julian whispered venomously. "You think you can block a project backed by three international banks and half the city council? I will tie that penthouse up in litigation until Chloe is broke and gray-haired!"

"You won't have the time, Julian," I said softly, pulling out my smartphone and tapping the screen.

Suddenly, the massive 3D rendering of The Vance Plaza projected on the main stage screen flickered and disappeared. In its place appeared a massive bank ledger showing an illegal offshore corporate account in the Cayman Islands—detailing direct monthly payments from Julian Vance’s holding company to Victoria Dudley’s gambling accounts over the last three years.

The entire ballroom broke out into utter chaos as guests pulled out their phones, taking photos of the damning financial evidence exposed on the giant screen.

Julian turned toward the stage screen in absolute horror, his face turning ghost-white. "Turn that off! Turn it off right now!" he screamed at the technical staff.

Robert adjusted his cuffs calmly, looking down at his terrified cousin. "That same financial file was delivered to the State Attorney General ten minutes ago, Julian. The police aren't coming to arrest a syndicate matriarch tonight. They're coming for you."
