Chapter 3 - The Ambush at Morning Brunch

By seven in the morning, the sun was rising over Miami, painting the sky in soft shades of pink and orange. But inside my high-rise apartment, the atmosphere felt like the command deck of a military strike team. Chloe was propped up on plush pillows, heavily medicated but awake, her swollen face showing the painful reality of what had happened just five hours earlier.
Evelyn Ward sat across from her on the glass coffee table, spreading out several legal documents alongside high-definition photographic prints of Chloe's injuries. "The annulment papers are drafted, Chloe," Evelyn said, her voice smooth and razor-sharp. "Because the marriage was never consummated and was immediately followed by felony aggravated battery and attempted extortion, we can erase this legally within forty-eight hours."
"What about Victoria?" I asked, sitting next to my daughter, holding her cold, trembling hand. "She threatened to kill Chloe if she told anyone."
Robert stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass, holding a steaming cup of black coffee. He hadn't slept a single second, and his eyes were completely bloodshot with suppressed rage. "Victoria is currently at the Grand Plaza Hotel," Robert said coldly. "She booked the grand ballroom for a post-wedding morning brunch with eighty elite guests. She expects Chloe to walk in, smiling, bruised, and thoroughly broken, ready to sign the property transfer in front of everyone to save face."
"Is Lewis there?" Chloe whispered, her voice cracking at her husband's name.
Robert turned around, his face a terrifying mask of calm. "Lewis is downstairs in the hotel lobby right now, drinking champagne with his fraternity brothers, boasting about how he finally locked down a multi-million-dollar real estate heiress."
"They think they won," I said, feeling a cold fire ignite deep inside my own chest. The terror I had felt at three in the morning was rapidly morphing into pure, unadulterated vengeance. "They think we're afraid of the public scandal."
"Public scandal?" Evelyn chuckled softly, capping her expensive pen. "My dear Sarah, a scandal is only bad if you're the one defending yourself. When you're the one dropping the bomb, a scandal is absolute poetry."
At precisely eight-thirty in the morning, two large black SUVs pulled up to the valet entrance of the luxury Grand Plaza Hotel. Robert stepped out first, wearing a custom-tailored dark charcoal suit, his gray hair combed back perfectly. I stepped out right beside him, dressed in a sharp black dress, holding myself high and proud. And behind us walked Evelyn Ward, accompanied by two uniformed off-duty police officers and Marcus, Robert’s towering chief of security.
Chloe stayed behind in the apartment under the strict protection of Dr. Patel and two armed security guards, safe from the carnage we were about to inflict.
We walked into the lavish, marble-columned ballroom where soft jazz music was playing. Towering floral arrangements of white roses covered every table. Crystal chandeliers caught the morning sunlight, illuminating eighty of Miami’s wealthiest socialites, corporate attorneys, and city officials, all sipping mimosa cocktails and laughing happily.
At the main head table sat Victoria Dudley. She looked regal, wearing a bright pastel pink designer dress, heavy gold pearl necklaces, and a triumphant smile as she conversed with a high-court judge sitting to her left. Lewis stood nearby, wearing a crisp suit, holding a glass of expensive champagne, laughing loudly with his friends.
The moment Victoria caught sight of Robert and me walking into the room, her smile froze. Her eyes darted quickly behind us, looking for Chloe. When she saw that Chloe was not with us, her expression hardened, a subtle flick of annoyance passing through her eyes.
"Sarah! Robert!" Victoria said loudly, standing up and opening her arms as if welcoming dear family, trying to control the room. "Where is our beautiful bride? Is she still sleeping off the excitement of last night?"
The entire ballroom went quiet as people turned to look at the unexpected entrance.
Robert didn't stop walking until he was standing less than two feet from Victoria’s head table. He didn't look at the judge, nor did he look at the aristocratic guests watching in curiosity. He stared straight into Victoria’s cold, calculated eyes.
"Chloe isn't coming to brunch, Victoria," Robert said, his voice carrying clearly across the quieted room.
Lewis walked over quickly, putting on a smooth, charming smile. "Father-in-law, is everything okay? Chloe was a bit emotional last night, so I thought—"
CLACK.
Robert didn't say a word. He simply gestured to Evelyn Ward.
Evelyn stepped forward, took a heavy glossy folder from her briefcase, and slammed a stack of giant, 11x14 high-definition color photographs directly onto the main brunch table, sliding them right into Victoria’s plate of eggs benedict and over Lewis’s champagne glass.
The entire head table gasped in collective horror.
The top photograph showed Chloe’s face—badly swollen, her lip split open and bloody. The second photograph showed her pale back, completely covered in horrific, purple-and-black bruised handprints. The third photograph showed the torn, blood-drenched back of her silk wedding dress.

"What... what is the meaning of this absolute nonsense?!" Victoria shrieked, her face turning instantly ghost-white as the judge sitting beside her leaned over, his eyes wide with utter shock.
"The meaning, Victoria," I said, stepping up right next to Robert, staring her down with absolute disgust, "is that you have roughly ten minutes before every television news station in the state receives a high-resolution copy of those exact photos."
