Chapter 9 - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF VANCE

Six months later. The federal courthouse in the Southern District of New York was packed to maximum capacity. The gallery was filled with journalists, corporate executives, and members of high society, all eager to witness the final chapter of the city's most scandalous criminal trial.

Elena sat at the prosecution table, dressed in a sharp, elegant navy-blue suit. Her dark hair was pulled back into a professional bun, her expression calm, dignified, and unbreakable. Sitting right beside her, his hand firmly holding hers beneath the table, was Leo Sterling.

Leo looked pale but healthy, his broad shoulders filling out his tailored charcoal suit. The bullet had missed his heart by less than an inch, requiring three emergency surgeries and months of intensive physical therapy. But he had survived. And today, they were here to watch the empire that had abused them burn to the ground.

At the defense table sat Julian Vance and Victoria Vance. They were dressed in standard prison jumpsuits, their hands chained to their waists. Victoria looked twenty years older, her glamorous facade completely stripped away, leaving only a bitter, broken old woman. Julian sat with his head bowed, the arrogant swagger he once possessed entirely crushed by six months in a federal holding cell. Marcus Sterling was absent; he had been arrested by international authorities on his yacht off the coast of Italy three months prior and was currently awaiting extradition in a maximum-security prison.

The honorable Judge Margaret Thomas knocked her gavel, bringing the buzzing courtroom to an immediate silence.

"The defendants will rise," the judge ordered.

Julian and Victoria stood up shakily, assisted by their court-appointed defense attorneys.

"In the matter of the United States versus Julian Vance and Victoria Vance," Judge Thomas began, her voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "This court has reviewed the extensive, undeniable evidence provided by the key witness, Elena Sterling. The depth of financial fraud, corporate money laundering, international smuggling, and domestic violence committed by the defendants is staggering. You used your position of privilege to exploit the innocent, abuse your own family, and enrich yourselves through illicit black markets."

The judge looked down at Julian with absolute disdain. "Julian Vance, for the charges of grand larceny, money laundering, conspiracy to commit murder, and armed assault, I sentence you to forty-five years in a federal maximum-security penitentiary without the possibility of parole."

Julian collapsed back into his chair, a silent sob escaping his lips as the reality of spending the rest of his life behind bars sank in.

"Victoria Vance," the judge continued, "for your complicity in corporate fraud and conspiracy, I sentence you to twenty years in federal prison."

Victoria let out a loud, dramatic wail, burying her face in her hands as the marshals stepped forward to lead them away.

As Julian was led past the prosecution table, he stopped for a brief second, looking at Elena. His eyes were no longer full of rage—they were full of a pathetic, desperate pleading. "Elena... please... help me... appeal... we’re family..."

Elena stood up, looking her brother directly in the eyes. Her gaze was cool, clear, and completely devoid of malice. She didn't hate him anymore. He was too insignificant for her hatred.

"Goodbye, Julian," Elena said softly. "The Vance family is officially out of business."

The marshals shoved Julian through the heavy double doors, closing them with a loud, final click.

The gallery erupted into a frenzy of chatter as journalists rushed out to file their stories. Elena turned to Leo, a massive wave of relief washing over her body. The heavy weight she had carried on her shoulders since she was a little girl—the weight of abuse, isolation, and fear—was finally gone. She was entirely light.

Leo stood up, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her close against his chest. "It’s over, Elena," he whispered into her ear. "They can never touch you again."

Elena looked up at him, a beautiful, radiant smile breaking across her face. "No, Leo. It's not just over. It’s our beginning."
