Chapter 6

Chapter 6 - THE SLIPPING MASK

The next three days were a whirlwind of covert legal maneuvers. Leo’s penthouse had transformed into a war room. Federal prosecutors from the Department of Justice were brought in through the private service elevator, signing non-disclosure agreements before reviewing the mountain of evidence Elena had compiled. The whistle-blower immunity contract was finalized; Elena was legally protected, but the emotional toll was devastating. It was Friday evening. The rain had finally stopped, replaced by a thick, heavy fog that rolled off the East River, blanketing the city in gray. The prosecutors had left an hour ago, satisfied with the data. The trap was set. The federal warrants for Julian Vance and Marcus Sterling were scheduled to be executed on Monday morning.
Elena stood on the private terrace of the penthouse, leaning against the cold glass railing, watching the fog swallow the city lights. She wore one of Leo’s oversized cashmere sweaters over her leggings, the sleeves pulling over her hands.
The glass door slid open quietly, and Leo stepped out onto the terrace. He had changed into a simple black t-shirt and dark jeans. He stood beside her, looking out into the fog.
"The DOJ is ready," Leo said softly. "On Monday, it all ends, Elena. The Vance Group will be seized, and Julian and Marcus will be taken into custody. You did it. You’re free."
Elena let out a long, shaky breath, her breath misting in the cool air. "Why don't I feel free, Leo? I just feel... numb. I’ve spent my whole life fighting them, hiding from them, trying to survive their cruelty. Now that it’s almost over, I don't even know who I am without the fear."
Leo turned his body toward her, leaning his hip against the railing. "You are the strongest woman I’ve ever met, Elena. You built an empire while being abused by the people who were supposed to protect you. Don't let them define your future. The fear is theirs now."
Elena looked up at him. The fog cast soft, silver shadows across his sharp features, softening the harsh angles of his jaw. "And what about us, Leo? Our contract is for two years. But the Vances will be gone by next week. Marcus will be ruined. What happens to this marriage?"
Leo stared at her, his dark eyes intense, searching her face. The silence stretched between them, thick and heavy with unspoken emotions. The mask of the cold, calculating businessman he always wore was slowly slipping away, revealing the vulnerable man underneath.
"Do you want it to end, Elena?" Leo asked, his voice dropping to a quiet whisper.
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. "I don't know," she whispered back truthfully. "This was supposed to be a deal. A business arrangement. But... you didn't just protect my assets, Leo. You protected me. You held me when I was falling apart. No one has ever done that for me."
Leo stepped closer, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating from his body. He raised his hand, his large, warm palm gently cupping her cheek. His thumb stroked her skin, right over the place where the bruise had finally faded completely.
"It stopped being a deal for me the moment you walked into my office on Tuesday night," Leo admitted, his voice rough with emotion. "I saw a woman who was bleeding but refused to broken. I told myself I was using you to get to Marcus. But the truth is, Elena... I can't imagine this penthouse without you anymore. I don't want a two-year contract. I want a lifetime."
Elena’s eyes filled with tears, but this time, they weren't tears of fear. They were tears of pure, overwhelming relief. She leaned her face into his palm, closing her eyes. "Leo..."
Leo leaned down, his breath warm against her lips before he kissed her. It wasn't the staged, performative kiss of the gala. It was deep, fierce, and full of a desperate, long-hidden passion. Elena wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, letting herself drown in the safety of his embrace. For the first time in her life, she wasn't fighting a war. She was just home.
When he finally pulled away, his forehead rested against hers, his breathing heavy. "I love you, Elena. And I will spend the rest of my life making sure no one ever hurts you again."
"I love you too, Leo," she whispered, her heart finally filling with the peace she had chased for so long.
But their moment of peace was brutally cut short.
Inside the penthouse, the security alarm began to chime—a low, rhythmic pulsing sound that indicated a breach of the building’s perimeter.

Leo instantly went rigid. He pushed Elena behind him, his eyes shifting back into the cold, lethal gaze of a commander under attack. He pulled his phone from his pocket, checking the security feed. The camera in the private elevator lobby downstairs showed two men in security uniforms, but their faces were covered by tactical masks. They had bypassed the primary lobby guard.
"They're coming up," Leo said, his voice dropping to a deathly calm. "Julian didn't wait for Monday."
