Chapter 2

CHAPTER 2: THE DEVIL’S BARGAIN
The rain began to fall in heavy, relentless sheets as Elena stepped out of the Vance Plaza. The neon lights of Manhattan blurred into streaks of red and gold against the wet pavement. She pulled her trench coat tightly around her shoulders, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her scalp still burned where Julian had yanked her hair, a throbbing reminder of the cage she was desperate to escape.
But she wasn’t running away to hide. She was running to find a weapon.
Sitting in the back of a yellow cab, Elena stared at her laptop screen. The glowing display illuminated her pale face as she stared at the profile of Leo Sterling. Unlike his uncle, Marcus, who was a loud, ostentatious predator of the old-money world, Leo was a shadow. At thirty-two, he was the founder of Apex Venture Capital, a powerhouse that had quietly bought up distressed assets and tech startups, turning them into monopolies. He was notoriously reclusive, ruthless in negotiations, and harbored a well-known, deep-seated hatred for his uncle. Rumor had it that Marcus had cheated Leo’s father out of his share of the Sterling empire, driving him to ruin.
He’s the only one, Elena thought, her fingers tightening on the keyboard. The only one with enough power to shield me, and enough venom to help me poison the Vances.
She knew Leo’s schedule because she had spent months analyzing market competitors for Vance Group. Every Tuesday night, after the markets closed, Leo worked late at his private office in the Soho district, eschewing the flashy corporate towers for a discreet, high-security loft.
Twenty minutes later, Elena stood in front of the cast-iron building. The security guard at the desk downstairs looked up, his brow furrowing at her disheveled appearance. Her hair was damp from the rain, her cheek was slightly flushed from where she had been handled, but her eyes held a fierce, unbreakable resolve.
"I’m here to see Leo Sterling," she said, her voice steady.
"Do you have an appointment, ma'am?" the guard asked, his hand hovering near the phone.
"Tell him Elena Vance is downstairs," she said, leaning forward. "And tell him I have the keys to the Vance Group's digital infrastructure. He has exactly five minutes to decide if he wants them, or if I take them to his competitors."
It was a bluff. She didn't have the full keys yet—but she had the administrative access she had built herself. And she knew Leo was a predator who never ignored scent of blood.
Three minutes later, the elevator doors slid open, and the guard gestured for her to enter. "Seventeenth floor, Ms. Vance. Mr. Sterling will see you."
The elevator ride was silent, the numbers ticking upward like a countdown. When the doors opened, she stepped directly into a minimalist, sprawling loft. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the rainy Manhattan skyline. Standing by the window, a glass of amber liquid in his hand, was Leo Sterling.
He was taller than she expected, broad-shouldered, wearing a charcoal-gray tailored suit without a tie. His dark hair was brushed back, and his eyes, sharp and dark as obsidian, assessed her in a single, sweeping glance that made her feel entirely naked.
"Elena Vance," Leo said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone. "The quiet genius of the Vance family. You look like you’ve had a rough night."
Elena walked into the room, refusing to let her gaze waver. "I’ve had a rough life, Mr. Sterling. But tonight is the night I change that."
Leo smirked, taking a slow sip of his drink. He walked over to a leather armchair and gestured for her to sit opposite him. She declined, remaining standing.
"The guard said you brought a toy," Leo said, leaning against the edge of his massive mahogany desk. "The keys to the Vance digital kingdom. Why would you betray your own blood?"
"Because they aren't my blood. They are parasites," Elena said, her voice dropping to a cold whisper. "Today, my stepmother and brothers threatened to strip my mother's trust fund from me. And then, they told me they are selling me to your uncle, Marcus Sterling, to bail out their real estate debt."
Leo’s eyes narrowed. A sudden, dangerous tension filled the room at the mention of his uncle’s name. "Marcus. He’s always loved buying young, pretty things he can break. And your family is desperate enough to sell you."
"I am not a thing," Elena said fiercely. "And I will not be broken. I know you hate Marcus. I know you’ve been trying to hostile-takeover Sterling Logistics for three years, but you lack the leverage inside his board. I can give you that leverage. And I can give you the Vance Group's proprietary marketing algorithms, which will bankrupt their core commercial divisions within six months."
Leo looked at her, his curiosity clearly piqued. "And what do you want in return, Elena?"
"Protection," she said, stepping closer. "And a contract. I want a marriage of convenience. With you."
The silence that followed was deafening. Leo stared at her, his face an unreadable mask. Then, slowly, a dark, amused chuckle escaped his lips.
"A marriage?" Leo asked, shaking his head. "You want to escape one predator by walking directly into the den of another? What makes you think I’m any better than Marcus, or your brother Julian?"
"Because you are a businessman, not a sadist," Elena countered, her heart pounding but her voice remaining razor-sharp. "Marcus wants to own me. My family wants to crush me. You, on the other hand, want to destroy them both. A marriage to me gives you immediate legal access to my mother’s trust shares, which hold a fifteen percent voting block in Vance Group. It also publicly humiliates Marcus—his brilliant, beautiful prize snatched away by his rival nephew. It’s a public relations coup and a financial death blow."
Leo stood up, his towering frame casting a long shadow over her. He walked slowly around her, examining her like a prize horse. He stopped just behind her, his breath warm against her ear.
"You’re smart," he murmured. "And you’re desperate. Desperate people are dangerous, Elena. They make mistakes."
"I don't make mistakes," she said, turning to face him. "I survived ten years in that house. I built their digital empire while they sneered at me. I know exactly what I am doing."
Leo reached out, his long fingers gently catching her jaw. His touch was warm, surprisingly gentle, but his grip was firm. He tilted her face up, his thumb brushing over her flushed cheekbone. He saw the faint, swelling shadow of Julian's handiwork. His eyes darkened with a cold, terrifying fury.
"Who did this?" Leo asked, his voice dropping an octave.
"Julian," Elena whispered.
Leo’s thumb stroked her skin once more before he released her. He walked back to his desk, picked up his phone, and dialed a number.
"Arthur," Leo said into the receiver. "Draft a standard ironclad prenuptial agreement. Bulletproof asset separation, except for voting rights in the Vance Group and Sterling Logistics. Put a clause in for a mutual-benefit marriage, duration of two years. Yes, tonight. Have it ready in an hour."
He hung up and looked back at Elena. "We do this my way. You move into my penthouse tonight. You do not contact your family. You do not answer their calls. Tomorrow morning, we file the marriage license. By noon, the world will know you are Mrs. Leo Sterling."
May you like
A wave of relief so intense it made her dizzy washed over Elena. She nodded, her hand gripping the edge of the desk to steady herself. "Thank you, Leo."
"Don't thank me yet, Elena," Leo said, his eyes burning with a dangerous light. "You just made a deal with the devil. And I always collect my dues."
