CHAPTER 4: WAR IN THE BALLROOM

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering sequins, black tuxedos, and the soft, clinking sound of champagne flutes. The elite of New York society had gathered, but tonight, the atmosphere was thick with anticipation. Everyone was waiting for the entrance of the year.

Elena stood in the dressing room of Leo's penthouse, staring at her reflection in the full-length mirror. The stylist Leo had hired had done wonders. She wore a stunning, backless emerald green silk gown that draped beautifully over her slender frame, contrasting sharply with her pale skin and dark hair. The high neck of the gown elegantly concealed the faint bruising on her collarbone, while the open back revealed a flawless, striking silhouette.

Leo walked in, wearing a bespoke black tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders perfectly. He stopped in his tracks, his eyes darkening as he took her in.

"You look... spectacular, Elena," he said, his voice unusually soft.

"I don't feel spectacular. I feel like a lamb walking into a wolf's den," she admitted, her hand instinctively reaching for the emerald ring on her finger.

Leo walked up behind her, placing his hands on her shoulders. His touch was warm and reassuring. "You are not the lamb tonight, Elena. You are the hunter. And I am right beside you."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a velvet box. Opening it, he revealed a stunning emerald necklace that matched her ring perfectly. He gently draped it around her neck, his fingers brushing against her skin, sending a pleasant shiver down her spine.

"Let's go make some enemies," Leo whispered.

When they arrived at the gala, the flashbulbs of the paparazzi were blinding. The moment Leo stepped out of the limousine and offered his hand to Elena, the crowd erupted. Photographers clamored for their attention, shouting their names. Leo kept his hand firmly on the small of her back, guiding her through the chaos with calm, effortless grace.

Inside the ballroom, the whispers started immediately. People stared, nudging one another as the newlywed couple walked in.

And then, she saw them.

Standing near the grand staircase were Victoria, Julian, and Carter. They were dressed in their finest, but their faces were masks of pure fury. Beside them stood Marcus Sterling—a heavy-set man in his late fifties with a cruel sneer and predatory eyes that locked onto Elena with terrifying intensity.

"Keep walking," Leo murmured near her ear. "Smile. Let them see how happy you are."

Elena flashed a brilliant, radiant smile, leaning closer to Leo as they walked directly toward their enemies.

"Leo," Marcus Sterling said, his voice like gravel grinding together. "I see you’ve taken to picking up my discarded trash."

"On the contrary, Marcus," Leo replied smoothly, his arm tightening around Elena’s waist. "I simply recognized a priceless diamond before you could ruin it with your clumsy hands. But please, don't let our happiness ruin your evening."

"You think you're clever, boy?" Marcus hissed, stepping closer, his face turning red. "You think this little stunt changes anything? I can crush your venture fund with a single phone call."

"Try it," Leo said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy tone. "I've spent the last ten years waiting for you to try. I have enough short-positions on your shipping logistics to sink your company by Friday if you even think about moving against me."

Julian Vance stepped forward, his eyes fixed on Elena, burning with a violent rage. "Elena. You belong at home. You have contracts to sign. You are embarrassing this family."

Elena felt a momentary tremor of fear, but she looked at Leo, then back at Julian. She took a step forward, breaking out from behind Leo’s protective frame.

"I don't embarrass this family, Julian. You do," Elena said, her voice clear enough for the surrounding socialites to hear. "The Vance Group is drowning in debt because of your incompetence. And the only way you could think to save yourself was by trying to sell me like cattle. Well, I am married now. To a man who actually respects me. Your leverage is gone. Your threats are empty. And I will see you in court."

Victoria’s jaw dropped in shock. Julian took a violent step forward, his hand raising instinctively as if to strike her, completely forgetting they were in a crowded ballroom.

Before he could even raise his hand halfway, Leo stepped in. He grabbed Julian’s wrist in a vice-like grip, squeezing until Julian’s face contorted in pain.

"I warned you," Leo whispered, his voice vibrating with a lethal energy that made even the hardened security guards nearby freeze. "Touch my wife again, and I will dismantle your life piece by piece. Now, get out of our sight before I have security throw you out of your own gala."

Leo released Julian's wrist, pushing him back. Julian stumbled, looking around in humiliation as he realized dozens of New York's wealthiest elite were watching them.

With a cold, triumphant smile, Leo turned back to Elena, offering his arm. "Shall we dance, Mrs. Sterling?"

May you like

Elena smiled, her heart soaring with a feeling she hadn't felt in a decade: absolute, glorious freedom. "I would love to, Mr. Sterling."

As they danced under the glittering chandeliers, Elena looked up at the man who had saved her. She knew the war was far from over, but for the first time, she felt like she was actually winning.
