Chapter 7

Chapter 7 - BETRAYAL AND BACK

LASH"Go to the safe room. Now," Leo ordered, his voice cracking like a whip as he guided Elena toward the hidden door behind the library bookshelf."Leo, no! I'm not leaving you!" Elena cried, her panic returning with a vengeance.
"Elena, listen to me!" Leo grabbed her by the waist, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute authority. "The safe room is bulletproof and has an independent satellite communication array. You go in there, you lock the door, and you call the federal marshals. I have my own security team on the way, but I need to clear the main living area. If they get to you, they win. Do you understand me? Lock the door!"
Before she could argue, Leo shoved her into the small, reinforced room and hit the emergency override button. The heavy steel door slid shut with a mechanical whine, locking with a thick, ominous thud.
Elena stood in the dark safe room, her heart hammering violently. The walls were lined with monitors displaying the penthouse’s internal and external security feeds. She frantically picked up the tactical satellite phone on the desk and dialed the direct line to Prosecutor Vance’s task force.
On the screens, the private elevator doors of the penthouse burst open. Two heavy-set men clad in black tactical gear stepped out, firearms drawn. But they weren't alone. Walking out behind them, wearing a crumpled suit and holding a heavy silver revolver, was Julian Vance.
Julian’s face was completely manic, his eyes wide and vacant, the face of a man who had lost his sanity along with his empire.
Leo was waiting for them in the main living area, standing calmly behind the marble kitchen island. He didn't have a firearm in his hands, but his posture was that of a coiled spring.
"Where is she, Leo?" Julian screamed through the security monitors, his voice distorted by the audio feed but echoing with pure psychotic rage. "Where is my sister? She belongs to me! She belongs to Marcus! You stole her, and you ruined our family!"
"Your family ruined itself, Julian," Leo said, his voice cool, level, and entirely devoid of fear. "The FBI has your offshore accounts. The marshals are already en route. Put the gun down before you make your prison sentence a permanent one."
"Prison?" Julian laughed, a high-pitched, terrifying sound. "I’m not going to prison! Marcus is already halfway to a non-extradition country on a private yacht. But he left me behind! He left me to take the fall! I have nothing left, Sterling! Nothing! But I won't let you two live happily ever after while I rot in a cell!"
Julian gestured to his two hired thugs. "Find her. Tear this place apart. She’s hiding somewhere."
In the safe room, Elena watched the two thugs begin to ransack the apartment, kicking down doors and smashing expensive artwork. She spoke frantically into the satellite phone. "This is Elena Sterling! The penthouse at 740 Park Avenue is under active armed assault! Julian Vance is here with armed mercenaries! They are trying to kill us! Please, send help!"
"We have units five minutes away, Mrs. Sterling! Stay locked in the safe room!" the operator shouted back.
Five minutes. It felt like an eternity.
On the monitors, one of the thugs approached the library bookshelf. He noticed the slight misalignment of the wood—the telltale sign of the hidden door mechanism. "Boss! Over here! There’s a hidden room!"
Julian rushed over, his revolver aimed at the bookshelf. "Elena! Open this door! Open it or I swear to God I will shoot through the wall!"
Leo didn't hesitate. He knew the steel door was bulletproof, but he couldn't risk them using explosives or finding the manual release override. With the speed of a professional fighter, Leo lunged across the living room. He tackled the first armed thug from behind, slamming the man’s head into the marble floor, knocking him unconscious instantly.
The second thug turned, raising his submachine gun, but Leo scrambled, grabbing the fallen thug’s weapon and firing a short, precise burst into the second man's shoulder. The thug cried out, dropping his weapon and collapsing to the ground, clutching his bleeding wound.
But the distraction was exactly what Julian needed.
Julian turned away from the bookshelf, his face twisted in a demonic sneer. He raised his silver revolver and aimed it directly at Leo’s chest.
"Leo!" Elena screamed inside the safe room, her hands slamming against the cold steel door as she watched the monitor in horrific slow motion.
BANG.
The gunshot blasted through the penthouse speakers, loud as a cannon.
Leo stumbled backward, a dark stain instantly blooming across the left side of his white t-shirt. He crashed against the glass railing of the terrace, his weapon slipping from his fingers as he fell to one knee, gasping for air.
Julian stood over him, laughing hysterically, raising the revolver for a final, lethal headshot. "Goodbye, Sterling. Tell your father I said hello."
Elena couldn't take it anymore. She couldn't watch the man she loved die while she hid in a box. She slammed her hand onto the emergency door release code. The steel door slid open.

"Julian! Stop!" Elena screamed, running out of the library into the living room, her eyes fixed on her brother’s gun. "Stop! Don't shoot him! I'll come with you! I’ll sign whatever you want! Just leave him alone!"
Julian froze, his gun still aimed at Leo, but his eyes snapping over to Elena. A sick, triumphant grin spread across his face. "Ah, the little mouse finally leaves her hole."
