Chapter 5

Chapter 5 - SECRETS IN THE DARK

The honeymoon period, if it could even be called that, was an illusion that shattered the moment they returned to the penthouse. The high of the Metropolitan Gala had worn off, leaving behind the cold, hard reality of the war they had declared. Elena sat at the massive dining table, surrounded by three dual-monitor laptops, encrypted external hard drives, and stacks of financial printouts. It was 3:00 AM. The city outside was quiet, but inside Elena’s mind, the noise was deafening. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing firewalls she had helped design for the Vance Group.
Leo walked into the room, carrying two plates of simple ham and cheese sandwiches. He had shed his tuxedo jacket, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up. Despite the late hour, his eyes were sharp, scanning her face for signs of exhaustion.
"You need to eat," Leo said, placing a plate beside her laptop. "And you need to sleep. You’ve been staring at those screens for six hours straight."
"I can't sleep, Leo," Elena said without looking up. "Julian is cornered. When a man like Julian is cornered, he doesn't just sit around. He’s going to strike back, and he’s going to use the company’s remaining capital to do it. I need to find where they are hiding the money before he flushes it down an offshore drain."
Leo sat down next to her, picking up one of the printouts. "My analysts tracked their commercial real estate portfolio today. They defaulted on the Madison Avenue property. The banks are circling. If Marcus doesn't bail them out, the Vance Group will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy by the end of the month."
"That’s the thing," Elena said, finally stopping her typing and turning to him. "Marcus can't bail them out right now. Look at this." She pointed to a screen displaying a complex spreadsheet of shipping logs and shell company transactions. "I managed to clone Julian’s encrypted drive before I left. I’ve been decrypting his personal ledger. It’s not just a liquidity crisis, Leo. The Vance Group hasn't been losing money on bad real estate. They’ve been inflating their tech valuation to launder money for Marcus’s offshore shipping routes."
Leo’s posture froze. The sandwich in his hand was forgotten as he leaned in closer to the screen. His jaw tightened, a dangerous vein throbbing at his temple. "Laundering? Marcus has been using the Vance marketing infrastructure to create fake digital transactions?"
"Exactly," Elena explained, her voice tight with adrenaline. "Marcus’s cargo ships carry undeclared luxury goods, illegal contraband, and unregistered firearms across international waters. The money generated from those black markets is funneled into the Vance Group as 'ad-spend' from shell companies based in the Cayman Islands. Julian takes a twenty percent cut, uses it to fund their lavish lifestyle, and cooks the books to make it look like corporate revenue. My mother’s trust fund? They didn't need it for liquidity. They needed it to fill a ten-million-dollar deficit because the federal authorities started auditing one of the Cayman shells last month."
Leo stared at the data, a cold, terrifying smile slowly spreading across his lips. It was the smile of a predator that had finally found the throat of its prey.
"This is it," Leo whispered, his voice dangerously soft. "This isn't just a corporate takeover anymore, Elena. This is a federal prison sentence for Marcus and your brother."
"But it’s a double-edged sword," Elena warned, her eyes shadowed with worry. "My name is still on some of those older corporate filings from two years ago. When I ran the marketing division, Julian made me sign off on secondary financial audits. I didn't know what they were doing back then—I thought they were just standard tax write-offs—but on paper, it looks like I was complicit."
Leo turned her chair around so she was forced to look directly at him. He placed his hands on her shoulders, his gaze fiercely intense. "Listen to me. I will not let them drag you down with them. My legal team will structure a whistle-blower immunity package for you before we hand this over to the Southern District of New York. You came to me for protection, Elena. I protect what is mine."
What is mine. The words hung heavily in the air between them. Elena felt her breath catch. This was supposed to be a marriage of convenience, a cold contractual agreement between two people with mutual enemies. But looking into Leo’s eyes, feeling the fierce, protective warmth radiating from him, she realized the boundaries they had set were beginning to blur.
Before she could say anything, a sharp, piercing sound cut through the silence. It was Elena’s personal cell phone—not the burner, but the one she kept active so her family could think they still had a line of communication.
The screen flashed with an incoming video call. The caller ID read: Julian.
Leo reached for the phone, but Elena stopped his hand. "No. Let me answer it. If we don't answer, they’ll know we are hiding something big. Let's see how desperate they are."
Elena tapped the screen and propped the phone against the monitor. The video connected, and Julian’s face filled the screen. He wasn't in his office. He was sitting in the dimly lit library of the Vance estate, a glass of scotch in his hand. His hair was disheveled, his tie undone, and his eyes were bloodshot with rage.
"Elena," Julian hissed, leaning into the camera. "You think you’re safe in that billionaire’s penthouse? You think that bastard Leo can shield you from what’s coming?"
"Hello, Julian," Elena said, her voice remarkably calm despite the fear clawing at her throat. "I see you’re drinking alone. Did Victoria finally realize you ruined the family fortune?"
Julian slammed his glass onto the table, the sound cracking through the speaker. "Shut your mouth! You listen to me, you ungrateful little parasite. I know what you took. I know you cloned my personal hard drive before you ran off to spread your legs for Sterling."
Elena didn't flinch. "I don't know what you're talking about, Julian."
"Don't lie to me!" Julian screamed, his face contorting into a mask of pure psychotic malice. "You think you can ruin me? If I go down, Elena, I am taking you with me. I have the documents you signed two years ago. I will tell the feds you were the mastermind behind the entire Cayman operation. And if the courts don't lock you away..." He paused, a sick, twisted smile curling his lips. "...I’ll make sure Marcus’s associates take care of you permanently. You won't make it to the trial, little sister."
Leo stepped into the camera frame, his massive shadow completely blocking Elena from view. He leaned down, staring into the phone with a gaze so lethal it seemed to freeze the air.
"Julian," Leo said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, guttural rumble. "You have exactly twenty-four hours to enjoy your freedom. Drink your scotch. Look at your expensive house. Because by this time tomorrow, the FBI is going to tear your life apart. And if you ever threat my wife again, I won't wait for the law. I will personally find you, and I will make sure you regret the day you were born."
Without waiting for a reply, Leo smashed his thumb against the screen, disconnecting the call.
The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. Elena was trembling, the reality of Julian’s death threat sinking in. He was losing his mind, and a man with nothing to lose was the most dangerous creature alive.

Leo turned to her, his face pale with fury. Without a word, he pulled her up from the chair and wrapped his strong arms around her, pulling her tight against his chest. Elena hid her face in his shoulder, her hands gripping the fabric of his shirt as the tears she had held back for days finally began to flow.
"I’ve got you," Leo muttered into her hair, his grip tightening as if he could physically shield her from the world. "I’ve got you, Elena. Nobody is going to touch you."
