Chapter 8

Chapter 8 - THE CORNERED BEAST

"Elena... no... go back..." Leo gasped from the terrace floor, his voice weak, his hand pressed against his bleeding chest. The blood was leaking through his fingers, staining the gray stone tile of the balcony."Shut up!" Julian barked, stepping over Leo’s prone body and grabbing Elena roughly by her arm. His grip was vicious, bruising her skin, but she didn't care about the pain anymore. Her eyes were locked onto Leo, tears streaming down her face as she saw his eyelids fluttering, his consciousness slipping away.
"You’re coming with me, Elena," Julian hissed, pulling her toward the private elevator. "We’re going to the docks. Marcus’s associates have a boat waiting. You’re going to log into your master terminal from a satellite laptop and wipe the federal servers, or I will drop you into the Atlantic Ocean with a block of concrete tied to your feet."
"I won't do it, Julian," Elena said, her voice shaking but her eyes suddenly turning hard as flint. She looked at her brother—the monster who had terrified her for her entire childhood—and realized he wasn't a god. He was just a pathetic, desperate criminal who had lost everything. "The federal servers are already mirrored. Even if I log in, the data cannot be erased. You’ve already lost. Look at yourself. You’re a pathetic joke."
Julian’s face turned bright red, a vein bulging on his forehead. "You bitch!" He raised his hand, the heavy silver revolver gripped tightly, and swung it toward her face, intending to pistol-whip her into submission.
But Elena didn't cower this time. She didn't close her eyes and wait for the blow.
As Julian raised his arm, Elena reached into her pocket. Before leaving the safe room, she had grabbed a heavy, tactical steel pen from the desk—a weapon Leo kept for emergency self-defense. With a scream of pure defiance, she drove the sharp metal tip of the pen directly into Julian’s right thigh, twisting it with all her strength.
Julian let out a horrific shriek of agony. His grip on her arm loosened as he stumbled backward, his leg collapsing under him. The silver revolver slipped from his hand, clattering across the marble floor toward the edge of the terrace.
Elena didn't hesitate. She scrambled across the floor, grabbed the revolver, and stood up, aiming the weapon with both hands directly at Julian’s chest. Her arms were shaking, her breathing ragged, but her eyes were lethal.
"Get away from him, Julian," Elena commanded, her voice ringing out like steel.
Julian lay on the floor, clutching his bleeding thigh, staring up at his little sister in absolute shock and terror. He had never seen this version of her. The quiet, submissive girl was gone, replaced by a fierce, protective lioness.
"Elena... please... we’re family..." Julian whimpered, holding his hands up in surrender. "Don't shoot. We share the same blood."
"We don't share anything," Elena said coldly.
Suddenly, the glass doors of the private elevator lobby shattered inward. A team of six federal marshals clad in body armor, weapons raised, flooded into the penthouse. "FBI! Nobody move! Drop the weapon!"
Elena slowly knelt down, placing the revolver on the floor, keeping her hands visible. "He’s unarmed," she shouted to the officers. "My husband is wounded on the terrace! He needs a medic immediately!"
Two marshals tackled Julian to the floor, slamming his face into the marble and clicking handcuffs around his wrists. Julian screamed and cursed, but they dragged him away like garbage.
Elena didn't watch him go. She turned and ran to the terrace, collapsing onto her knees beside Leo.
"Leo! Stay with me! Please, look at me!" she cried, pulling his head into her lap, pressing both of her hands over his chest wound to stop the bleeding. The warm, metallic smell of his blood covered her hands, but she didn't care.
Leo slowly opened his eyes, his dark obsidian gaze finding hers. A faint, weak smile touched his lips as he reached up with a trembling hand, brushing a tear from her cheek.
"You... you fought back," Leo whispered, his voice barely audible over the sound of the approaching police sirens outside. "My... brave girl..."
"I fought for us, Leo," Elena sobbed, pressing her forehead against his. "Don't you dare leave me. We have a lifetime contract, remember? You promised me."
May you like
"I... I never break a contract," Leo murmured, before his eyes closed and his hand fell limply to his side.
"Medic!" Elena screamed into the foggy night sky, her voice echoing across the towers of Manhattan. "Please, save him!"
