Chapter 6 - Poisoned Chalice

Z

Two weeks after the arrest of Victor Vance outside the gates of the Greenwich estate, the media circus surrounding Carter Global Logistics had begun to settle into a cold, methodical legal process. The preliminary hearings for Evelyn and Chloe Carter were scheduled at the Fairfield County Superior Courthouse, and the grand jury had officially returned a twenty-four-count indictment against Victor Vance for federal wire fraud, attempted corporate extortion, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny.

Despite the legal victories, the atmosphere inside the Carter household remained thick with tension. Maya’s physical wounds were healing—the deep bruises on her cheek and shoulders had faded to faint yellowish marks—but the psychological scars ran far deeper. She found herself checking the window locks three times before sleeping, and the sound of unexpected footsteps in the hallway would cause her heart to race uncontrollably.

Alex sat across from her in the sunroom, watching as she quietly flipped through a magazine without reading a single page. He placed two mugs of warm herbal tea on the glass table between them, sitting down beside her and gently resting his hand over hers.

"You don't have to go to the preliminary hearing tomorrow, Maya," Alex said gently. "Arthur can represent our interests. The video evidence speaks for itself. You don't need to sit in the same room with Evelyn and Chloe."

Maya looked up at him, her dark eyes reflecting a complex mix of lingering trauma and quiet determination. "If I don't go, Alex, Evelyn will think she still holds power over me. She spent months making me feel small, making me feel like an intruder in my own home. I need to look her in the eye while she is sitting in handcuffs. I need her to see that she didn't break me."

Alex smiled softly, leaning forward to press his forehead against hers. "You are the strongest person I know, Maya. But promise me that if it becomes too overwhelming, you will let me take you out of that courtroom."

"I promise," she whispered.

The following morning, the atmosphere outside the county courthouse was electric. Dozens of press crews had set up satellite trucks along the marble steps, pushing forward as Alex’s armored SUV pulled up to the curb. Surrounded by six private security guards, Alex helped Maya out of the vehicle, shielding her from the flashing cameras and aggressive questions shouted by the press core.

Inside Courtroom 3B, the temperature was stifling despite the high ceilings and ancient oak paneling. Seated at the prosecution table was District Attorney Marcus Sterling, a sharp, unyielding prosecutor known for his relentless prosecution of white-collar crime and high-profile domestic violence cases.

When the side door of the courtroom opened, a hush fell over the gallery.

Evelyn and Chloe were led inside by two armed sheriff’s deputies. Both women were wearing bright orange institutional jumpsuits, their hands chained at their waists and their feet wearing heavy iron shackles that clinked rhythmically against the hardwood floor. Chloe was weeping quietly, her eyes swollen and red, her posture entirely crushed. But Evelyn walked in with her chin held high, her eyes scanning the gallery until they locked directly onto Alex and Maya.

There was no remorse in Evelyn’s eyes—only a cold, calcified malice that seemed to burn brighter despite her incarceration.

As the judge took the bench and the formal proceedings began, District Attorney Sterling read the list of charges, detailing the severe physical trauma inflicted upon Maya and the systematic attempt to rob the estate safe. When Sterling submitted the medical reports and the high-definition video as primary exhibits, Evelyn’s defense attorney—a court-appointed public defender, as all her private accounts had been frozen—stood up to offer a brief, desperate plea for reduced bail.

"Your Honor," the defender argued, "my client is a sixty-four-year-old woman with no prior criminal record. She is a lifelong resident of Connecticut and poses zero flight risk. We request that bail be modified to a reasonable amount under electronic home monitoring."

District Attorney Sterling immediately rose, his voice ringing through the silent courtroom. "Your Honor, the defendant did not merely commit a financial crime. She committed an act of unspeakable cruelty against a pregnant woman, pinned to the floor in her own home, while actively attempting to steal gold, cash, and corporate securities. Furthermore, financial analysis shows that defendant Evelyn Carter was actively attempting to flee to a non-extradition jurisdiction in South America using forged travel documents that were recovered from her personal locker at her country club yesterday morning."

The judge’s face hardened instantly. He looked down at Evelyn with deep disdain. "Bail remains denied. The defendants will remain in custody pending full trial."

As the deputies moved in to escort the prisoners back to the holding cells, Evelyn suddenly stopped. She turned her head toward the gallery, locking her eyes directly onto Maya.

"You think you’ve won, you little street rat?" Evelyn hissed, her voice cutting through the quiet courtroom before the deputies could grab her. "You think my son loves you? You're just a vessel carrying an heir! Once that baby is born, he will realize what you truly are! You ruined my family!"

"Silence in the court!" the judge shouted, slamming his gavel down with thunderous force. "Remand the defendant immediately!"

The deputies forcefully dragged Evelyn through the side door, her sharp heels scraping uselessly against the floor as Chloe sobbed hysterically behind her.

Maya sat in the gallery, her hand gripping Alex’s arm so tightly her knuckles turned white. She did not flinch. She did not lower her eyes. She watched Evelyn being dragged away, feeling the last remaining threads of fear dissolve into absolute, unyielding clarity.

"Are you okay?" Alex whispered, wrapping his arm around her shoulders.

Maya took a deep, steadying breath, looking at the empty doorway where his mother had just disappeared. "I’m fine, Alex. For the first time in months... I am completely fine."

However, as they exited the courthouse through a private rear entrance, Arthur Vance approached them with a grim expression on his face. He held a secure tablet displaying an incoming message from the state forensic laboratory.

"Alex, we just received the preliminary chemical analysis of the organic supplements and tea tins that your security team confiscated from Evelyn’s suite in your house," Arthur said, his voice dropped to an anxious whisper.

Alex’s posture stiffened instantly. "What did they find?"

Arthur looked at Maya with deep concern before speaking. "The prenatal supplements that Evelyn was personally giving Maya every morning... they weren't organic vitamins. Evelyn had been systematically mixing them with high doses of synthetic thyroid extract and heavy chemical sedatives."

Alex felt the world stop spinning. A cold, terrifying weight plummeted straight into his stomach. "What did you say?"

"It was a slow-acting poison scheme," Arthur explained, his voice shaking slightly with outrage. "It was designed to induce chronic physical weakness, severe anxiety, and eventually... a spontaneous termination of the pregnancy. She wasn't just abusing Maya, Alex. She was slowly, methodically poisoning your wife."

Alex looked down at Maya, whose face had gone completely ghost-white. Her hands immediately flew to her stomach, her breathing becoming rapid and shallow as the sheer, demonic horror of what Evelyn had been doing to her came into full, terrifying focus.

Alex wrapped his arms around Maya as she began to tremble, his eyes burning with an absolute, lethal rage. Evelyn Carter was not just going to prison. Alex was going to make sure she was destroyed so completely that even her name would be erased from history.
