Chapter 12 - Shadows Across the Atlantic

The private jet glided smoothly through the night sky, its engines emitting a soft, low hum that vibrated through the luxurious leather-and-mahogany interior. Below, the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean remained shrouded in pitch-black darkness, a void separating the hard-won peace of Greenwich from the ancient financial elite of London. In the primary cabin, Alex Carter sat beside a wide oval window, his tablet displaying an intricate map of European logistics hubs and offshore equity trusts. Beside him, Maya was curled up under a plush cashmere blanket, her breathing steady as she slept peacefully. In the adjacent quiet suite, little Victoria was resting under the watchful eye of their private pediatric nurse.
Alex rubbed his temples, staring at a series of encrypted documents that Arthur Vance had delivered just two hours before their departure from JFK. On paper, this trip to the UK was a triumphant corporate victory lap—a formal celebration to finalize Carter Global’s acquisition of North Sea Logistics, a mega-deal that would cement their absolute dominance over transatlantic shipping routes.
However, the encrypted file on his screen told a vastly different story.
When Victor Vance’s empire was dismantled by federal authorities, his primary liquid assets were seized. But Arthur’s financial investigators had uncovered a ghost network: a cluster of centuries-old Swiss trusts and London-based holdings controlled by a shadowy enclave known as the Sovereign Maritime Guild. The Guild was an elite syndicate of European shipping magnates who had quietly funded Victor Vance’s attempted takeover of Carter Global years ago. With Victor dead and Evelyn serving a seventy-five-year sentence, the Guild faced exposure. Rather than retreat, they were moving to cut off Carter Global’s international lines of credit before the acquisition could be finalized at the London Stock Exchange.
The jet began its quiet descent toward Stansted Airport just as the first pale light of dawn broke over the horizon. Alex closed his tablet, reaching over to gently brush a strand of dark hair from Maya’s cheek. She opened her eyes, offering a soft, tranquil smile that instantly dissipated the cold tension in his chest.
"Are we there?" Maya asked, her voice slightly raspy from sleep.
"Just landing," Alex said softly, taking her hand. "The car is waiting on the tarmac. We’ll go straight to the Savoy, get settled, and then I have a preliminary briefing with our European legal team."
Maya looked at him closely, her sharp instincts picking up on the faint shadow behind his eyes. "Alex... Arthur found something else, didn't he? Before we left New York?"
Alex hesitated for a split second, knowing he could never lie to her. "Victor wasn't acting alone on the international side. The men who backed his firm in London are trying to block the North Sea deal. But it’s corporate maneuvering, Maya—purely financial. They don't have leverage here."
Maya sat up, her expression hardening into the quiet strength that had carried her through the nightmare of Greenwich. "They thought they had leverage in Connecticut, too. We don't ignore threats anymore, Alex. We crush them before they take root."
Twenty minutes later, their motorcade of three armored Range Rovers cut through the damp London fog, moving swiftly toward central London under the escort of a private British security detail. At the Savoy Hotel, an entire private wing on the fifth floor had been secured, complete with sweeping views of the River Thames and isolated security access points.
While Maya took Victoria to the master suite, Alex met Arthur Vance and their European Director, Julian Sterling, in the suite’s private conference room. Sterling, an austere Englishman with sharp blue eyes and decades of maritime law experience, placed a heavy leather folder on the glass table.
"Alex," Sterling began without preamble. "The opposition isn't just trying to outbid us on North Sea Logistics. The Chairman of the Guild’s steering committee is Lord Reginald Sterling—no relation to me, I assure you—a man who holds immense sway over the Maritime Regulatory Authority in the UK. He has filed an emergency injunction claiming that Carter Global’s recent internal scandals and criminal trials make your firm an unstable entity under British maritime law."
Alex leaned back in his chair, his eyes narrowing into slits of ice. "Lord Sterling... he was a silent partner in Victor Vance’s Miami venture eight years ago."
"Precisely," Arthur added, leaning forward. "Reginald Sterling isn't just protecting his investments; he’s trying to punish you for destroying Victor. If his injunction holds at the High Court of Justice tomorrow morning, Carter Global will be barred from operating in UK waters for five years, cratering our stock and invalidating the North Sea acquisition."
Alex walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the grey waters of the Thames. "Reginald Sterling thinks he’s playing against a desperate American corporate executive. He thinks because we are on his home turf, I’ll compromise."
Alex turned around, looking at Arthur and Julian. "Call a meeting with Lord Sterling for eight o'clock tonight at his private club in Mayfair. Tell him I’m coming alone to discuss terms."
May you like
Arthur looked alarmed. "Alex, meeting Sterling in Mayfair on his terms is dangerous. That club is a fortress for the old money elite."
"It’s not a compromise, Arthur," Alex said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm. "It’s an ambush."
