Chapter 15 - The Syndicate’s Return

The private flight back across the Atlantic was executed in total radio silence. Carter Global’s private security detail was elevated to Level Alpha—the highest threat posture possible—with six armed operatives stationed inside the cabin alongside Alex, Maya, and little Victoria.
When the aircraft landed at a private airfield in White Plains, New York, under the cover of a dense midnight rain, they were met by a tactical motorcade of four heavily armored SUVs. Captain David Miller personally opened the door for Alex, his face grim, his body armor fully strapped.
"Mr. Carter," Miller reported quietly as they sped down the highway toward Greenwich. "The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have taken over the investigation into Evelyn’s escape. The level of tactical sophistication used in the ambush was military-grade—thermite charges on the transport doors, flash-bangs, and smoke deployment. It was executed in less than forty-five seconds."
"What about the note left at the scene?" Alex asked, his hand firmly holding Maya’s as she held Victoria close to her chest.
"The symbol left behind was a stylized trident entwined with a black serpent," Miller confirmed. "The old mark of the Cross Syndicate out of Boston and Buenos Aires. FBI intelligence confirms that Gabriel Cross returned to the United States on a private vessel forty-eight hours ago."
"Who is Gabriel Cross, David?" Maya asked, her voice steady despite the terrifying reality of their situation.
"Gabriel Cross was your father-in-law’s original rival forty years ago, Mrs. Carter," Miller explained, pulling up a digital dossier on his tablet. "He was a brilliant, cold-blooded maritime logistics operator who built his fortune on smuggling and corporate extortion. When William Carter and Declan Ross ousted him from the syndicate in 1995, Cross faked his own death in Argentina, operating from the shadows for three decades while building an international criminal network. He was the one who quietly funded Victor Vance’s gambling debts and provided Evelyn with the fraudulent loan connections in Miami."
"And now he’s pulled Evelyn out of prison," Alex realized, his jaw tightening into iron. "Why? Evelyn is a disgraced, ruined woman with zero financial power."
"She’s not a financial asset to him, Alex," Miller said grimly. "She’s intimate knowledge. Evelyn knows every security code, every panic room layout, every routine, and every structural vulnerability of your Greenwich estate and your corporate headquarters. Cross broke her out because she is the ultimate key to breaking through your defenses."
Twenty minutes later, the motorcade pulled through the gates of the Greenwich estate. The property had been transformed into an impenetrable fortress: armed guards in tactical gear patrolled every fifty yards, thermal imaging towers hummed along the perimeter, and two armored vehicles sat parked on the main lawn.
Inside the house, Arthur Vance was waiting in the command center, surrounded by banks of security monitors displaying live feeds from across the property.
"Alex," Arthur said, holding up a secure satellite phone. "We just received an encrypted digital transmission routed through an IP address in Zurich. It was sent directly to your personal portal ten minutes ago."
Alex stepped up to the main desk, opening the file.
The screen illuminated to display a high-definition video message. Sitting in a leather armchair in a lavish, dark-paneled room was Gabriel Cross. He was a man in his late seventies, with silver hair, a dark eye patch over his left eye, and a face carved from cold stone. Standing behind his chair, looking thin, hollow, and hauntingly insane, was Evelyn Carter.
"Greetings, Alex," Gabriel Cross’s voice resonated through the speakers—a deep, raspy whisper that oozed pure, unadulterated malice. "It has been many years since I looked upon a Carter. You look remarkably like your father, William... arrogant, self-righteous, and foolishly believing that money can buy permanent safety."
Evelyn stepped forward into the camera frame, a terrifying, manic smile spreading across her weathered face. "Hello, my darling son," Evelyn hissed, her voice dripping with venom. "Did you really think you could lock me away in a cage forever? Did you really think you could enjoy my husband's wealth with that common street girl while I rotted?"
Gabriel Cross held up a dark velvet box, opening it to reveal an ancient, iron key—the original physical master key to the founding vault of Carter Global Logistics in Boston.
"Your father stole my empire thirty years ago, Alex," Cross continued, his eye burning with deadly intent. "He buried my legacy and forced me into exile. Now, I have returned to collect what is mine—with interest. I have taken your mother, not out of love, but because she understands the depth of my hatred for your bloodline. In forty-eight hours, I will strip you of everything you hold dear: your company, your fortune, and your family."
The video cut to black, leaving an ominous, echoing silence in the command room.
Maya stood beside Alex, looking at the black screen. She did not tremble. She did not cry. The fear that had once paralyzed her had been completely burned away by months of surviving trials that would have broken anyone else.
She looked up at her husband, her dark eyes flashing with absolute, terrifying resolve.
"He wants a war, Alex," Maya said, her voice ringing clear and strong through the room. "Let's give him one."
Alex turned to Captain Miller and Arthur Vance, his posture towering, his eyes burning with a lethal, absolute focus.
"Activate every resource Carter Global possesses," Alex commanded coldly. "Deploy our private security fleet to Boston. Contact federal law enforcement and tell them we are initiating a full-scale offensive against the Cross Syndicate. Gabriel Cross made one fatal mistake."

"What mistake, Alex?" Arthur asked.
"He thought he was dealing with my father," Alex said, his voice dropping into a register of icy, unstoppable authority. "My father tried to buy his peace. I am going to hunt him down and erase him from the face of the earth."
