Chapter 4 - The Trial of Public Opinion

The grand auditorium on the ground floor of the Carter Global Logistics building was packed to capacity with over two hundred journalists, financial analysts, and television news crews. Camera flashes exploded like stroboscopic lights against the dark mahogany backdrop of the stage, while the muffled roar of reporters shouting questions filled the vaulted room. News tickers across major financial networks were already broadcasting the breaking headline: CARTER GLOBAL IN CRISIS: CEO’S MOTHER ARRESTED AS HOSTILE TAKEOVER BID LOOMS.
Standing behind the heavy velvet curtain offstage, Alex adjusted his dark charcoal suit. His face was stoic, carved from granite, but his eyes burned with a razor-sharp focus. Beside him, Maya stood in a simple, elegant dark blue dress. She looked pale, but her posture was erect, refusing to show a single trace of weakness despite the intense physical and emotional trauma of the past week.
Arthur Vance walked up to them, holding a leather folder containing the final draft of the public statement. "The media is bloodthirsty, Alex. Victor Vance’s public relations firm has been leaking selective tidbits all night, framing this as a tragic family feud driven by your corporate greed and Maya’s supposed manipulation of your father’s estate. They are trying to turn public sympathy toward Evelyn, portraying her as a grieving, elderly mother being cast aside by a ruthless billionaire son."
"Let them frame it however they want," Alex said quietly, his voice dangerously calm. "They are playing a game of media narrative. We are playing a game of absolute truth. Is the video feed prepared?"
"Ready on your signal," Arthur confirmed, his thumb hovering over a remote control. "The feed will be simultaneously broadcast to every major news network, as well as uploaded directly to our investor relations portal."
Alex looked down at Maya, gently squeezing her hand. "You don't have to be out there for this if it's too much."
Maya looked up at him, her dark eyes flashing with an unyielding fire. "I was forced to hide in the shadows for months, Alex. I’m not hiding anymore. Let them see what your mother did."
Together, they stepped out from behind the curtain and walked toward the podium. The sudden surge of camera flashes was blinding, and a dozen reporters immediately began shouting over one another.
"Mr. Carter! Is it true your mother is facing grand larceny charges?"
"Alex! How do you respond to the takeover petition filed by Ross Heritage Holdings?"
"Mrs. Carter! Were you involved in managing the family’s offshore accounts?"
Alex reached the podium, placed his hands on either side of the microphone, and simply stood there in absolute silence. He did not ask for order. He did not bang a gavel. He simply stared directly into the main television camera lens with an icy, commanding presence that gradually forced the entire room into an uneasy, suffocating quiet.
When the room was entirely silent, Alex spoke. His voice was low, deep, and resonated through the loudspeakers with terrifying clarity.
"Over the past forty-eight hours, a carefully orchestrated campaign of lies, financial extortion, and character assassination has been launched against my family and my company," Alex began. "Certain corporate entities, led by Victor Vance and supported by shady offshore holdings, have attempted to use personal family tragedy to execute a hostile takeover of Carter Global Logistics. They have claimed that I am unfit to lead this company. They have claimed that my mother, Evelyn Carter, is an innocent victim of a domestic dispute."
Alex paused, taking a slow breath before continuing.
"I am not here today to offer corporate excuses or legal double-speak," Alex said. "I am here to present the unvarnished reality."
Alex turned his head slightly toward Arthur. "Roll the footage."
The grand projection screens on either side of the stage instantly burst to life. The audio blasted through the auditorium’s sound system with horrific, unedited clarity.
"Scream all you want! Alex is on a plane to Tokyo, and nobody is coming to save you!"
The room gasped collectively. Reporters froze mid-note, their eyes glued to the massive screens above the stage.
The video played in brutal high-definition: Evelyn holding Maya down by her hair, her face contorted with rage, demanding the safe combination; Chloe furiously swinging the claw hammer into the wall safe; the scattered gold bars and stacks of stolen cash; and finally, Alex entering the frame, calling 911 while his pregnant wife lay unconscious on the hardwood floor.
The silence in the auditorium was absolute, heavy, and paralyzing. No one breathed. No one moved.
Alex let the video play for exactly three minutes—the precise duration of the nightmare—before signaling Arthur to turn it off. The screens went black, leaving the haunting echoes of Maya’s muffled groans hanging in the air.
"That video was recorded at 1:47 AM on Tuesday morning inside my personal residence," Alex said, his voice cold and steady. "The woman pinning my three-months-pregnant wife to the floor is my mother, Evelyn Carter. The woman smashing my safe with a claw hammer is my sister, Chloe Carter. They were not defending family assets. They were committing an armed home invasion, aggravated assault, and grand larceny."
Alex reached down, lifting a thick stack of certified medical reports and forensic financial audits, placing them heavy on the podium.
"Furthermore, forensic medical examinations revealed that my wife had been subjected to months of systematic physical abuse and nutritional deprivation at the hands of Evelyn Carter while I was away on corporate business," Alex continued, his eyes scanning the sea of stunned journalists. "And financial audits prove that this violence was intended to cover up a multi-million-dollar scheme masterminded by Victor Vance and Ross Heritage Holdings to fraudulently leverage my company’s assets."
The auditorium erupted into absolute chaos. Dozens of reporters jumped to their feet, shouting questions at the top of their lungs, but Alex did not answer them. He stepped away from the podium, wrapped his arm around Maya’s waist, and walked off the stage with slow, deliberate authority.
In the green room backstage, Arthur Vance was watching the immediate media reaction on a bank of monitors. Stock prices for Carter Global, which had plummeted four percent at market open, were already surging upward as public outrage shifted entirely toward Victor Vance and the corporate conspirators.
"It’s a complete slaughter in the media," Arthur reported, a look of profound satisfaction on his face. "Victor Vance’s public relations team has completely abandoned him. The District Attorney’s office just called—they are upgrading the charges against Evelyn and Chloe to include attempted murder of an unborn child and corporate conspiracy. And Ross Heritage Holdings’ legal representatives have just issued a statement claiming they had no prior knowledge of Evelyn’s physical violence and are withdrawing their takeover petition immediately."
Maya sat on the leather sofa backstage, taking a sip of water. The color was slowly returning to her face. "Is it over, Arthur?"
Arthur’s expression sobered slightly. "The takeover bid is dead, and Evelyn and Chloe will never see the outside of a prison wall for a very long time. But Victor Vance... Victor Vance hasn't been arrested yet. He has deep resources, and when a man like that loses everything in the public eye, he becomes incredibly unpredictable."
Alex stood near the window, looking out at the city streets below, where news vans were still parked in cluster formations. He knew Arthur was right. Victor Vance was not the kind of man to quietly accept total ruin. He was a predator who had spent a decade nursing a grudge against the Carter name, and now that his corporate maneuver had failed spectacularly, he would be driven by something far more dangerous than greed: pure, unadulterated vengeance.
Alex turned to his head of security, who was standing quietly by the door. "Track Victor Vance’s every movement. I want to know where he sleeps, who he speaks to, and every dollar he moves out of his personal accounts. If he so much as breathes near Maya or this company, I want him put in chains."
"Understood, Mr. Carter," the guard replied, bowing his head before stepping out.

Alex walked over to Maya, kneeling down beside her sofa, taking her hand in his. "We fought back, Maya. We showed them we won't be broken."
Maya looked at him, her eyes soft yet intense. "We survived the storm, Alex. Now we make sure it never touches us again."
