Zero nine

Chapter 1

“Scream all you want! Alex is on a plane to Tokyo, and nobody is coming to save you.”

That was the very first thing Alex Carter heard when he unlocked his front door at 1:47 in the morning.

A severe thunderstorm had grounded his flight at O’Hare, forcing him to return home unannounced. All he wanted was to wrap his arms around his wife, Maya, and hold her tight. She was three months pregnant and had been struggling with debilitating morning sickness for weeks.

Instead, a sharp, metallic thud echoed from the second-floor hallway, followed by the shattering of glass and a muffled groan that turned his blood to ice.

Alex dropped his garment bag onto the foyer floor and sprinted up the stairs.

The master bedroom door was standing half-open.

Maya was crumpled on the hardwood floor, clutching her stomach with both arms. Her lip was split and bleeding, her cheek badly bruised, and the strap of her nightgown torn off one shoulder. Looming directly over her was Alex’s mother, Evelyn, holding her down by her hair.

“Tell me the combination to the safe!” Evelyn snarled, shaking her. “Do you honestly think you’re getting your hands on my son’s wealth? You were a nobody before you trapped him!”

A few feet away, Alex’s younger sister, Chloe, was repeatedly slamming a heavy claw hammer into the electronic keypad of the built-in wall safe. On the bed lay an open duffel bag packed with thick stacks of cash, deed documents, and several gold bars from his private office.

“Mom, stop wasting time!” Chloe yelled, wiping sweat from her forehead. “If she won’t talk, give her something real to cry about! We need those bearer bonds in our hands tonight!”

Alex felt a cold, jagged rage slice through his chest.

For years, he had bankrolled his mother and sister without question. When Maya got pregnant, Evelyn had insisted on moving into their suburban estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, claiming she wanted to “cherish and care for her like a daughter.”

Alex had believed every single word.

His first instinct was to burst into the room and tear them away, but he checked himself at the threshold. If he reacted with physical violence, they would spin it as a messy domestic dispute, playing the victims to the police.

He pulled his smartphone from his coat pocket.

He hit record.

For three agonizing minutes, he filmed every frame: his mother issuing death threats while pinning a pregnant woman to the floor, and his sister methodically trying to smash open a wall safe while stuffing stolen assets into a bag.

Then, keeping his phone held high, he placed a call to 911.

“My name is Alex Carter,” he said in a loud, razor-sharp voice that cut straight through the room. “Two women are currently committing an armed home invasion, assaulting my pregnant wife, and attempting to rob my safe at 424 River Road. Send armed units and an ambulance immediately.”

The sound of the hammer instantly stopped.

Evelyn snapped her head toward the doorway. Chloe went deathly pale, dropping the hammer onto the rug.

Alex kicked the bedroom door wide open and stepped into the room, his suit jacket still damp from the rain outside.

“Alex?” Evelyn stammered, her voice instantly dropping into a high-pitched, pathetic tone. “What… what are you doing here? You’re supposed to be in Japan!”

Maya looked up from the floor. The sheer, paralyzing terror in her bruised eyes flickered into overwhelming relief for a split second. “Alex…”

She couldn’t finish the sentence. Her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed unconscious against the floorboards.

Alex dropped to his knees, gently lifting Maya into his arms and pulling her close to his chest.

Evelyn immediately dissolved into dramatic tears, wringing her hands. “Son, oh thank God you’re home! It’s not what it looks like! We caught her trying to clean out your safe! Chloe and I were just trying to hold her until the police arrived!”

Alex didn’t say a word. He looked at the open duffel bag, the claw hammer on the floor, the smashed keypad, and then stared directly into his mother’s eyes.

“The police are already on their way,” Alex said, his voice flat and terrifyingly quiet. “I suggest you spend the next five minutes getting your stories straight.”

Chloe began to tremble violently. Evelyn took a hesitant step toward him, holding out her hands. “Alex, please… I’m your mother.”

Alex wrapped his arms tighter around Maya, feeling her faint, rapid pulse. “Tonight, the police aren’t escorting my mother and sister out of this house. They’re arresting two felons for violent assault and grand larceny.”

In the distance, the first wails of police sirens cut through the thunder.

And Alex had no idea that the nightmare he had just caught on camera was merely a fraction of the torture Maya had been suffering in silence for months.

The moment uniformed officers burst into the master bedroom, Evelyn’s demeanor transformed instantly.

She threw herself to her knees, weeping hysterically and claiming that Maya had attacked them after being caught stealing. Chloe whimpered behind her, claiming she had picked up the hammer in self-defense.

Alex unlocked his phone, holding it out to the lead officer. “Before you take any statements, watch this.”

The high-definition video left zero room for interpretation. It clearly captured Evelyn demanding the safe combination while pinning Maya down, and Chloe talking about fencing the stolen bearer bonds before Alex returned from his trip.

The officers snapped handcuffs onto both of their wrists on the spot.

As the paramedics loaded Maya onto a stretcher to transport her to Greenwich Hospital, Alex remembered how many times over the past few months Maya had smiled weakly and told him, “Your mother is taking such good care of me, sweetie.”

Two hours later, an ER physician walked out into the waiting room.

“Mr. Carter, your wife and the baby are stable, but she is suffering from severe physical exhaustion, acute dehydration, and soft-tissue trauma. We need to keep her under observation for several days.”

Alex let out a long, shuddering breath.

Then the doctor’s expression hardened. “Mr. Carter, our examination uncovered deep, older contusions across her back and shoulders. Some of them are several weeks old. There are also clear physical markers of severe nutritional neglect. This abuse did not start tonight.”

The floor seemed to tilt beneath Alex’s feet.

He suddenly remembered the oversized sweaters Maya had been wearing in the middle of summer, her drastic weight loss, and the $5,000 monthly cash allowance he had been giving Evelyn specifically to buy Maya’s organic groceries and prenatal supplements.

Maya hadn’t just been suffering from severe morning sickness. She had been living in a domestic prison.

When she woke up in her private room, Alex sat beside her bed, holding her hand, his eyes red. “Why didn’t you tell me, Maya? Why did you hide this from me?”

Maya wept quietly, staring at the white sheets. “Your mother told me that if I complained, she would tell you I was trying to destroy your family. Chloe threatened to file false claims saying I was only with you for your money. I thought… I thought if I could just endure it until the baby came, they would leave.”

But the full scope of the plot was even darker.

Alex’s private security director conducted a deep-dive audit into Chloe’s financial accounts. The report arrived twenty-four hours later.

Chloe had accumulated nearly $600,000 in illegal gambling debts and high-interest loans from predatory bookmakers. She had liquidated her own accounts to maintain a lavish social media facade.

When the bookmakers threatened her, she turned to Evelyn.

And Evelyn came up with the plan.

They knew Alex was scheduled to be in Tokyo for a ten-day business trip. The plan was to force Maya to unlock the safe, steal $200,000 in cash, gold bullion, and commercial property deeds, sell what they could, and then frame Maya for the theft.

Their pre-written narrative was simple: “Maya suffered a psychotic break from pregnancy hormones, robbed Alex, and fled.”

The only reason the plan failed was because Alex’s flight was canceled—and Maya refused to give up the combination, even while being beaten.

That afternoon, Alex revoked every secondary credit card assigned to Evelyn and Chloe, canceled their access codes, and cut off their monthly stipends.

An hour later, Evelyn appeared in the hospital parking garage, waiting for him by his car. She wasn’t crying anymore. Her face was cold, bitter, and calculated.

“If you don’t drop these absurd charges and clear your sister’s debts immediately, I will make sure every news outlet in this state knows what kind of son you are,” she spat. “I will go on television and tell the world that you abandoned your own mother for an unstable, manipulative woman. Your company relies on public trust, Alex. Let’s see what your board of directors thinks when this goes viral.”

Alex looked at her, offering no reaction.

Evelyn smirked, convinced she had found his weak point.

Slowly, Alex pulled out his phone, opened a file folder, and turned the screen toward her.

Inside were the raw video footage from the bedroom, the certified medical injury reports, the forensic financial audit of Chloe’s gambling debts, and the police booking photos.

“Go ahead, Mom,” Alex said softly. “Call the news stations. Post your story.”

Evelyn’s smirk withered.

May you like

“Because the exact second you make a single public statement,” Alex continued, “I release every shred of this footage to the media myself.”

And just as the reality of her own destruction settled into her eyes, Alex’s phone buzzed with a priority notification from his legal team. They had uncovered a legal precedent that would excise Evelyn and Chloe from his life permanently.
