Chapter 14 - Echoes of the Past

By 7:30 AM the following morning, Lord Reginald Sterling’s legal team had submitted a complete, unconditional withdrawal of all court injunctions against Carter Global Logistics. By noon, the regulatory authorities in London granted absolute clearance for the acquisition of North Sea Logistics. Stock markets across Europe and New York reacted with an explosion of confidence, sending Carter Global’s valuation to an all-time high of twelve billion dollars.
Inside the penthouse suite at the Savoy, the atmosphere was one of quiet victory. Arthur Vance and Julian Sterling were reviewing the finalized acquisition contracts, popping a bottle of vintage champagne to celebrate.
Maya sat by the balcony window, holding little Victoria, looking out over the sunlit cityscape of London. Alex walked over, sitting beside her, taking her free hand in his.
"It’s over, Maya," Alex smiled softly. "The European board has approved everything. The Guild is neutralized, Sterling has resigned from all public posts, and our international routes are locked down permanently."
Maya smiled, kissing his cheek gently, but her eyes held a subtle, contemplative look. "You did amazing, Alex. I never doubted you for a second. But... while you were at Mayfair last night, I received a package at the hotel desk."
Alex’s posture stiffened instantly, his protective instincts surging back to life. "A package? Who delivered it?"
"It came via courier from a legal firm in Boston," Maya explained, reaching down to pull a thick, faded yellow envelope from her handbag. "It was sent by the estate administrator for the late Declan Ross Sr."
Alex took the envelope, feeling its heavy, parchment-like weight. "Declan Ross? His estate was settled months ago when we proved the 1993 Release of Equity."
"Open it," Maya whispered softly. "It wasn't meant for Victor Vance or your mother. It was addressed specifically to you, marked to be delivered only after you secured total control of the company's international assets."
Alex carefully broke the red wax seal on the back of the envelope, pulling out a stack of old letters written in his father’s distinctive handwriting, along with a black-and-white photograph taken in 1988.
The photograph showed three young men standing on the docks of Boston, arm in arm, smiling broadly: William Carter, Declan Ross Sr., and... a third man whose face had been aggressively crossed out with thick black ink.
Alex unpinned the top letter, reading his father’s words written nearly forty years ago:
“To my son, Alex—If you are reading this, it means you have successfully navigated the trial of fire that I knew would eventually come for our family. When I built Carter Global, I thought I could shield you from the dark alliances we made in the beginning. I thought repaying Declan Ross would bury the truth forever. But there was a third partner—a man whose greed exceeded even Victor Vance’s. A man who disappeared into the shadows of South America in 1995 after trying to sabotage our fleet...”
Alex felt a cold chill trace its way down his spine as his eyes scanned the bottom of the page:
“He goes by the name of Gabriel Cross. He holds the original bearer shares of our founding maritime charter. If he ever returns, he will not come for money or corporate shares, Alex. He will come to destroy everything we built out of pure, unadulterated vengeance.”
Alex looked up at Maya, the triumph of their European corporate victory suddenly shadowed by a chilling, lingering ghost from his father’s deepest past.
"Alex... who is Gabriel Cross?" Maya asked, seeing the sudden shift in his expression.
Alex re-read his father's final sentence, his grip tightening on the faded paper. "He’s the man who created Victor Vance. He’s the architect of the original syndicate."
Before Alex could say another word, Arthur Vance knocked rapidly on the suite door, stepping inside with a look of pale, panicked shock on his face.
"Alex! We have an emergency broadcast coming from Connecticut!" Arthur said, his voice trembling as he turned on the main television screen in the living room.
The screen flashed to a live breaking news report from a local Connecticut television station:
BREAKING NEWS: MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON TRANSPORT BUS AMBUSHED IN FAIRFIELD COUNTY. EVELYN CARTER REPORTED MISSING.
The news anchor’s voice echoed through the luxurious hotel suite: "Authorities report that an armed, highly trained tactical unit intercepted the prison convoy transporting Evelyn Carter to the federal courthouse this morning. Three guards were neutralized, and Evelyn Carter was pulled from the vehicle by masked assailants. A note left at the scene bore a single symbol: a crest belonging to the former Cross Maritime Syndicate..."
Maya gasping, dropping her mug onto the rug, her hands flying to her mouth in utter horror.
May you like
Alex stood up slowly, staring at the screen as the realization hit him like a physical blow. Evelyn hadn't just been sitting in prison waiting to die. Someone far more powerful, far more ruthless than Victor Vance had reached into the state prison system and dragged her out.
The war wasn't over. The final chapter was just beginning.
