Chapter 13 - The Mayfair Ambush

The Carlton Club in Mayfair was an imposing monument to British aristocratic wealth—dark oak paneling, oil portraits of long-dead prime ministers, and thick Persian carpets that swallowed the sound of footsteps. The private dining room on the second floor was lit by a dim crystal chandelier, casting long, dramatic shadows across a table laid with fine china and vintage wine.
At the head of the table sat Lord Reginald Sterling. At seventy, Sterling possessed a predatory elegance: snow-white hair brushed back neatly, a tailored Savile Row suit, and cold, pale eyes that looked upon the world with supreme arrogance. Beside him sat two senior barristers holding leather-bound legal briefs.
When Alex Carter entered the room, he wore a dark charcoal suit, walking with slow, imposing authority. He did not smile. He did not offer a hand to be shaken. He simply pulled out the leather chair opposite Lord Sterling and sat down.
"Mr. Carter," Reginald Sterling said, his voice smooth, accent refined, and utterly devoid of warmth. "I appreciate you taking the time to meet with me before your public embarrassment at the High Court tomorrow morning. I must say, your resilience in New York was quite impressive. Cleaning out your own mother and taking down poor Victor Vance was... dramatic, to say the least."
"Victor Vance was a fool who died in the mud because he mistook my patience for weakness," Alex replied flatly, his voice echoing in the quiet room. "And you, Lord Sterling, are making the exact same mistake."
Sterling chuckled softly, taking a slow sip of his wine. "You are far from home, Alex. In Connecticut, you had local law enforcement and domestic courts. In London, the Maritime Regulatory Authority responds to men whose families have controlled these ports for three hundred years. Tomorrow, my injunction passes. Your acquisition fails. Your stock drops thirty percent overnight, and Carter Global will be carved up by my syndicate."
Sterling reached into his coat pocket and slid a folded paper across the table. "Or, you sign this agreement tonight. You sell your European rights to my guild for fifty cents on the dollar, take your billions, and retire back to your suburban estate to play house with your wife."
Alex didn't look at the paper. Instead, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted metallic drive, placing it gently on the polished wood between them.
"Do you know what is on this drive, Reginald?" Alex asked quietly.
Sterling scoffed, waving a hand dismissively. "More video recordings? More domestic drama? You cannot intimidate me with American theatrics."
"This drive contains forty gigabytes of internal banking records from the Bank of Valetta in Malta," Alex said, his voice razor-sharp. "Specific to account number 884-Delta, registered under the name of Sterling Offshore Holdings. It details twelve years of systematic bribe payments made directly to members of the British Maritime Regulatory Board to suppress safety violations on your Guild's cargo ships."
Reginald Sterling’s hand froze mid-air. The smug arrogance on his face faltered for a fraction of a second, his pale eyes tightening. "That is complete fiction. Those accounts do not exist."
"They didn't exist to public auditors," Alex continued, leaning forward, resting his hands flat on the table. "Because Victor Vance was the broker who managed the offshore layering for you. When my private intelligence team seized Victor’s encrypted backup servers in Connecticut after his death, we didn't just find his corporate takeover plans. We found his entire ledger on you."
Alex pulled out his smartphone, tapping the screen once. On the wall monitor inside the private dining room, a live document feed illuminated, displaying wire transfers bearing Reginald Sterling’s personal signature alongside dates, amounts, and recipient accounts tied to senior government officials.
The two barristers sitting beside Sterling turned deathly pale, staring at the monitor in absolute horror.
"If you proceed with your injunction at the High Court tomorrow morning," Alex said smoothly, "this entire database will be simultaneously delivered to the Serious Fraud Office, the Inland Revenue, and the Metropolitan Police. You won't be carving up Carter Global, Reginald. You will be spending the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security facility, watching your family’s three-hundred-year legacy auctioned off to pay federal tax penalties."
The room descended into a suffocating, terrifying silence. The air grew thick, heavy with the realization of total, unexpected defeat.
Lord Sterling stared at the monitor, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the table. His lips trembled, his grand aristocratic facade shattering into dust. "You... you brought this to London..."
May you like
"I bring war to anyone who threatens my family or my company," Alex said softly, standing up from his chair. "Withdraw the injunction by midnight. Sign the clearance release for the North Sea acquisition by 8:00 AM tomorrow. If you fail to do either, I will ruin you so completely that history will forget your name."
Alex turned his back on the broken old lord, walking out of the private dining room without waiting for an answer.
