Chapter 9 - The Federal Trial and the Final Verdict

Z

The trial of United States v. Ethan Morgan became the media sensation of New York. News vans from every major network lined the perimeter of the Thurgood Marshall United States Courthouse in Lower Manhattan. Tabloids ran front-page headlines dubbing Ethan "The Penthouse Predator" and "The Runaway Groom."

I arrived at the courthouse in a sharp, tailored ivory suit, pushing Victoria’s stroller flanked by my executive security team. I didn't hide behind dark glasses; I walked up the granite steps with my head held high, looking every inch the self-made titan I was.

Inside Courtroom 508, the gallery was packed to capacity with former investors, socialites, and reporters. Ethan sat at the defense table, his tailored suits replaced by a ill-fitting navy blazer provided by legal aid. He looked gaunt, terrified, and utterly broken.

When I took the witness stand, the entire courtroom fell so silent you could hear the hum of the air conditioning.

"Ms. Morgan," Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Lin asked, standing before the jury box. "Can you tell the court what happened on the afternoon of September 14th in your penthouse?"

For forty-five minutes, I gave my testimony with calm, unshakable precision. I detailed the systematic financial abuse, the demand for my property, the fraudulent deed, and the exact physical mechanics of Ethan grabbing my hair, dragging me, and violently shoving me across the room while eight months pregnant.

When the prosecutor played the high-definition security audio, Ethan’s violent roar—"Sign the deed or you won't survive this pregnancy!"—shook the courtroom walls. Two jurors gasped in open horror, while an elderly woman on the jury glared at Ethan with pure, unyielding fury.

On cross-examination, Ethan’s public defender tried to rattle me. "Ms. Morgan, isn't it true that your family had a long-standing understanding that major family assets were shared communally?"

"No," I answered, looking directly at the jury. "My family had a long-standing understanding that I was expected to produce the wealth, and my brother was entitled to spend it. That parasitic delusion ended the moment he assaulted me and my unborn child."

The defense attorney had no further questions.

The jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.

When the foreperson stood to read the verdict, Ethan was shaking so violently his knees knocked against the defense table.

"On Count One, Aggravated Assault with Depraved Indifference: Guilty.

On Count Two, Attempted Grand Larceny in the First Degree: Guilty.

On Count Three, Multi-Jurisdictional Wire Fraud: Guilty.

On Counts Four through Nine, Securities Fraud and Identity Theft: Guilty on all counts."

Judge Harold Sterling looked down from the bench with stern, uncompromising authority. "Mr. Morgan, in my thirty years on the federal bench, I have rarely witnessed such an abhorrent display of unbridled narcissism, greed, and callous brutality toward your own kin. You attempted to maim your pregnant sister for the sole purpose of covering up your fraudulent financial empire."

Judge Sterling slammed his gavel down. "I sentence you to twenty-eight years in federal custody at ADX Florence, with mandatory restitution of twelve million four hundred thousand dollars to your victims. You are remanded immediately."

Ethan let out a shrill, pathetic shriek as U.S. Marshals clamped heavy iron chains around his ankles and wrists, dragging him out of the courtroom while the gallery erupted in cheers and flashbulbs illuminated the room.
