Chapter 14 - The Fall of Arthur’s Empire

Z
Following the catastrophic failure of the highway breakout, federal agents and state prosecutors executed simultaneous dawn raids across three states. Armed with the financial decryption data recovered from the Aegis Sentinel servers, the Department of Justice unsealed an eighty-four-count superseding indictment targeting the remnants of Arthur Morgan’s criminal empire.
At 9:00 a.m., Arthur was pulled from his cell at Green Haven and dragged into the prison’s maximum-security administration wing.
Sitting across from him in the interrogation room was not his defense lawyer, but Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Lin, flanked by Rachel Kim and Brenda Vance.
Arthur, wearing a stained prison jumpsuit and sporting several days of gray stubble, glared at Brenda with venomous hatred. "You... you miserable lunatic! You died thirty years ago!"
"I survived your sanitarium, Arthur," Brenda said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that made the old man flinch. "And I lived long enough to watch your precious daughter take every dime you ever stole from me, from your grandfather, and from the people of this city."
Sarah Lin dropped a fresh stack of legal documents onto the steel table with a heavy, echoing thud.
"Arthur Morgan, as of six o’clock this morning, your son Ethan has been apprehended during an armed federal transport escape attempt," Sarah announced coldly. "The thirty-five million dollars you attempted to launder through Aegis Sentinel has been permanently seized under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Because you used federal communications systems to hire an armed paramilitary unit against federal officers, you are now charged with Conspiracy to Commit Armed Insurrection, Attempted Murder of Federal Officers, and Murder for Hire."
Arthur’s face turned an ashen shade of gray. His hands began to shake violently against the tabletop. "Murder for hire? That's absurd! I only paid for transport!"
"The contract signed with Vanguard Logistics contained an explicit clause directing the mercenaries to eliminate Claire Morgan and her infant child at her residence following the extraction to prevent asset tracing," Rachel stated, sliding the decrypted contract into Arthur's line of sight.
Arthur’s mouth opened and closed soundlessly, like a fish gasping for air on dry land. He looked at Rachel, then at Brenda, searching frantically for any sliver of leverage, any hidden card he had left to play.
There was nothing.
"Your trial date has been vacated, Arthur," Sarah Lin continued ruthlessly. "Your plea agreement is revoked. We are going to trial on all eighty-four counts, and the Department of Justice is seeking three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. You will die inside a federal maximum-security penitentiary, completely penniless, completely forgotten."
Arthur collapsed forward onto the table, clutching his chest as hyperventilation overtook him. "Claire... tell Claire I’m her father! Tell her she can't do this to her own flesh and blood! I gave her life!"
Brenda stood up, buttoning her tailored suit jacket, looking down at the ruined shell of the man who had destroyed so many lives.
"You gave her nothing, Arthur," Brenda said softly. "She built herself. And she destroyed you."
Outside the prison gates, Evelyn Morgan stood shivering in the rain, having traveled by public bus after being released on conditional bail. When she saw Brenda step out of the black town car with Rachel, Evelyn rushed toward them, her cheap raincoat dripping with water.
"Brenda! Rachel!" Evelyn cried, clawing at Rachel’s umbrella. "What happened? Where is Arthur? Where is Ethan? I have no money for food! The bank closed my checking account!"

Rachel didn't even stop walking. "Mrs. Morgan, your husband is facing three consecutive life sentences, and your son is locked in subterranean solitary confinement in Colorado. As for you, the civil court has authorized the eviction notice for your Westchester residence. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises with whatever fits in two suitcases."
Evelyn fell onto her knees in the mud outside the prison gates, screaming into the empty, uncaring rain.
