Chapter 6 - The Mother’s Desperate Betrayal

With Ethan facing an avalanche of new federal wire fraud and grand larceny charges based on the decrypted thumb drive, the Morgan family dynamic rapidly mutated from co-conspirators to rabid wolves turning on one another. The illusion of family loyalty, which my parents had preached to me as a weapon of guilt for decades, vanished overnight.

On Thursday morning, Rachel received an urgent communication from Evelyn Morgan’s newly appointed legal aid attorney. Evelyn wanted to meet—not to apologize to me, but to offer a state’s evidence proffer against her own husband and son in exchange for total immunity and a monthly living stipend from my trust.

The meeting took place in a glass-walled conference room at the Manhattan District Attorney's office. Evelyn sat across the table, looking haggard and hollowed out, her manicured nails bitten down to the quick. When I walked into the room, supported by Rachel, Evelyn immediately lunged forward with outstretched hands, trying to summon crocodile tears.

"Claire, my precious girl," Evelyn sobbed, her voice trembling with theatrical melodrama. "Look at what they made us do! Look at how Arthur and Ethan poisoned everything! I was a victim too, darling! You must believe me!"

"Sit down, Mrs. Morgan," Agent Reeves commanded from the corner. "Or this meeting is terminated."

Evelyn sank back into her chair, dabbing her dry eyes. "Claire, you have always been the smartest one. The most capable. You know Arthur has been dominating this family for forty years. He forced me to sign those Delaware corporate formation documents! He told me Ethan would take care of our retirement if we just helped him secure the penthouse. I never wanted Ethan to push you! I screamed inside my heart, Claire! Every mother’s heart bleeds for her daughter!"

I sat across from her, my face an emotionless mask. "You stepped over my body, Evelyn. My water had broken. I was bleeding on the floor, begging you to call nine-one-one. You adjusted your purse and told me I was being dramatic."

Evelyn’s eyes darted frantically. "I was in shock! I didn't know what I was doing! But listen to me—I have proof. Arthur has a hidden safe deposit box at Chase on Madison Avenue. Inside is the original will of your grandfather, the one Arthur destroyed ten years ago! Your grandfather left the family estate and the original trust funds directly to you, Claire, not to Arthur! Arthur forged the probate documents to take control of the family money and funnel it all into Ethan’s failed ventures!"

Rachel and I exchanged a brief, chilling glance. Ten years ago, my grandfather—the only person in that family who had ever believed in my intellect—had passed away. I had been told he left me nothing, that everything went to Arthur to manage for Ethan’s future. That betrayal was the exact reason I had worked twenty-hour days in college, founding my tech company on grit and instant noodles while Ethan spent tens of thousands a month on sports cars and bottle service.

"So Arthur committed probate fraud a decade ago," Rachel stated, writing rapidly on her yellow legal pad. "And you kept quiet while your daughter struggled to put herself through school and build a business from scratch?"

"Arthur threatened to leave me penniless!" Evelyn cried, grabbing at my sleeve across the table. "Claire, I will testify against both of them! I will hand over the key to the safe deposit box! All I ask is that you buy me a modest two-bedroom condo in Boca Raton and provide five thousand dollars a month for living expenses! I am your mother! You cannot leave me on the street!"

I pulled my arm back, looking at the woman who had birthed me not with hatred, but with utter detachment.

"Evelyn," I said softly, my voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. "The only thing you are receiving from me is a subpoena."
