Chapter 3 - The High Altar Ambush

Z

St. Patrick’s Cathedral was adorned with thousands of cascading white gardenias and imported hydrangeas. Four hundred guests—the elite of New York’s corporate, social, and financial circles—sat in rows of polished mahogany pews, marveling at the sheer opulence of the Morgan-Vance union. Chloe Vance looked ethereal in a custom Vera Wang gown, clutching a bouquet of cascading orchids, while Ethan stood at the altar, grinning with triumphant arrogance.

Beside Ethan stood our father, Arthur, looking distinguished in his tailcoat, whispering congratulatory praises into his golden son's ear. In the front pew, my mother dabbed at dry eyes with an embroidered lace handkerchief, basking in the envious whispers of Manhattan’s high society. To everyone in that room, the Morgans were a portrait of aristocratic grace, generational wealth, and pristine moral character.

"Dearly beloved," the officiant began, his rich baritone echoing through the vaulted stone arches. "We are gathered here today in the sight of God and this congregation to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony."

Outside the heavy bronze doors, four black Suburbans pulled silently up to the cathedral steps. Special Agent Daniel Reeves stepped out, accompanied by four uniformed NYPD officers and Rachel Kim, who held a sealed crimson folder bearing the official crest of the Supreme Court of the State of New York.

"If any person can show just cause why they may not be lawfully joined together," the officiant proclaimed, pausing for the customary, ceremonial breath, "let them speak now or forever hold their peace."

The massive oak doors at the back of the cathedral swung open with a resounding, dramatic thud that reverberated through the stone sanctuary like a gunshot.

Heads turned in unison. Gasps rippled through the pews.

Down the center aisle walked Rachel Kim, flanked by federal investigators in dark suits, their gold badges glinting under the stained-glass light. Directly behind them was a towering multimedia technician carrying a high-output digital transmitter.

"Stop this service immediately," Rachel’s voice rang out, sharp, clear, and perfectly amplified. "I am Rachel Kim, legal counsel representing Claire Morgan. We are serving an emergency federal preservation order and executing warrants for felony aggravated assault, grand larceny, and multi-jurisdictional wire fraud."

Ethan’s face drained of every drop of color. He took an aggressive step down from the altar, his fists clenching. "What the hell is this? Security! Escort these lunatics out of my wedding!"

Arthur lunged forward, his face mottled with purple fury. "How dare you interrupt my son's wedding! This is a private religious ceremony! Get out before I have you disbarred!"

"You might want to check the monitors, Mr. Morgan," Rachel said calmly, gesturing toward the twin 85-inch digital screens flanking the altar, originally intended to display high-definition video of the bridal vows.

The technician plugged in the transmitter. The romantic slideshow of Ethan and Chloe instantly vanished.

In its place, high-definition, time-stamped video footage began to play on an infinite loop. The entire cathedral watched in horrified, breathless silence as Ethan grabbed his visibly eight-month-pregnant sister by the hair, violently whipped her around, and slammed her into the table. The crystal-clear audio captured his enraged voice: “Sign it! Sign the penthouse over!” followed by my agonizing scream as my water broke across the marble floor. The camera then clearly showed Arthur and Evelyn stepping callously over my writhing body, adjusting their coats, and stepping into the elevator without casting a single backward glance.

A collective, visceral gasp of pure revulsion tore through the four hundred guests. Chloe Vance’s bouquet dropped from her hands, petals scattering across the marble steps.

"Oh my God," Chloe choked out, backing away from Ethan as if he were a venomous snake. "You told me she willingly gifted us the deed. You told me she was resting at a spa!"

"Chloe, baby, listen to me, she’s lying! It’s a setup!" Ethan stammered, lunging toward his bride.

"Don't touch me!" she screamed, her voice cracking in pure horror. "You animal!"

Agent Reeves walked up the altar steps, his badge extended. "Ethan Morgan, you are under arrest for aggravated felony assault and attempted extortion. Arthur Morgan, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and witness tampering. Put your hands behind your backs."

The cathedral descended into absolute, deafening pandemonium.
