Chapter 5 - The Honeypot Unravels

Two days after the altar arrest, I was discharged from Mount Sinai under strict orders of bed rest. A private medical team and two executive protection officers were stationed inside my Manhattan penthouse, ensuring that the sanctuary my family had tried to steal remained completely impenetrable. The blood and water had been scrubbed from the marble floor, but the memory remained, crystallized into an unbreakable resolve.
I sat on the terrace with my laptop, cradling my baby bump as gentle kicks fluttered beneath my palms. My daughter was strong; she had survived their brutality, and I would ensure she inherited an empire built on truth, not parasitic greed.
My security intercom chimed. Marcus Lee’s voice came through the speaker. "Ms. Morgan, Chloe Vance is in the lobby with her father, Richard Vance. They are requesting five minutes of your time. They’ve already submitted to security screening."
I paused for a moment, then pressed the button. "Send them up, Marcus."
Five minutes later, Chloe walked into the foyer, flanked by her father, a prominent Wall Street venture capitalist. The bridal glow was entirely gone; Chloe was pale, her eyes rimmed with red, wearing simple dark jeans and a cashmere sweater. She looked at the coffee table, her eyes darting away in shame.
"Claire," Chloe began, her voice shaking as she extended a leather-bound folio. "I... I came to bring you this. And to apologize on my knees if necessary."
"Sit down, Chloe," I said evenly. "Mr. Vance."
Richard Vance shook my hand firmly, his expression grim. "Claire, my daughter had no idea what Ethan and his parents were orchestrating behind closed doors. When Ethan told her you were transferring the deed, he showed her falsified emails allegedly written by you, claiming you wanted to move to Europe to raise your child in privacy and were gifting them the home as a grand wedding gesture."
"I knew Ethan was ambitious," Chloe sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "I knew he liked to show off. But I never imagined... I never dreamed he was capable of laying his hands on you. The moment I saw that video in the church, I felt like I was standing next to a monster. I called my lawyers immediately. The marriage was never consummated, the license was never filed, and we have filed an immediate civil annulment and restraining order."
"Why are you here, Chloe?" I asked, keeping my tone measured.
She opened the folio on the table. "Ethan left his private laptop and encrypted hard drives at our shared rental townhouse. When he called me from Rikers using his one phone call, he didn't ask how I was. He ordered me to wipe the drives and destroy a blue thumb drive hidden inside his watch box. He threatened that if I didn't, his father’s connections would destroy my family’s reputation."
Richard Vance leaned forward. "We brought the drive directly to you and your attorney, Claire. We haven't touched it. We know you have the technological infrastructure to decrypt whatever is inside. We want to assist the prosecution in any way possible."
I plugged the blue thumb drive into my air-gapped forensic workstation. Within seconds, my decryption scripts bypassed the amateurish password security Ethan had implemented. What appeared on my screen was far worse than simple deed forgery.
Ethan had been operating a massive Ponzi scheme through E&C Holdings, soliciting over twelve million dollars from Chloe’s wealthy social circle by claiming he was co-owner of my former cybersecurity firm’s proprietary patents. He had used my name, my corporate credentials, and falsified balance sheets to secure multi-million-dollar unsecured loans from private credit funds.
He hadn’t just wanted my penthouse to impress his bride.

He desperately needed the eight-million-dollar equity in my home to pay off margin calls from Russian private equity lenders before his entire financial house of cards collapsed into ashes.
"He wasn't just planning to steal my home," I whispered, staring at the financial ledgers. "He was planning to use it as collateral to flee the country."
