Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Century

The federal courthouse was surrounded by hundreds of reporters, news helicopters, and protestors holding signs that read "JUSTICE FOR EMILY" and "END CORRUPT CONSERVATORSHIPS."
Inside courtroom 4B, the air was suffocatingly tense. The Holloway family sat at the defense table. Grant looked thin and haggard, dressed in a loose jumpsuit, his arrogance replaced by a hollow, terrified stare. Richard sat beside him, his eyes cold and defiant, flanked by a brand-new team of high-powered corporate lawyers. Vivian sat on the far end, refusing to look at anyone, clutching a handkerchief in her trembling hands.
Across the room, Emily sat next to me and Deputy Attorney General Lena Ortiz. Emily wore a simple grey blazer, her posture straight and composed. She was no longer the terrified victim from the mansion window; she was a survivor ready to tear down an empire.
Judge Raymond Prescott banged his gavel, his voice booming through the room. "This preliminary hearing for the State vs. Richard, Vivian, and Grant Holloway is now in session. Prosecuting attorney, present your opening statement."
Lena stood up, smoothing her jacket. She didn't use flashy legal jargon or theatrical hand gestures. She simply pointed at the defense table.
"Your Honor, what happened on the night of August 18th was not a private family dispute. It was the culmination of a multi-year, highly organized criminal syndicate operating under the guise of an elite American family. We will present physical evidence, financial paper trails, and unedited audio recordings proving that the defendants engaged in systematic kidnapping, physical abuse, judicial bribery, and grand larceny."
The lead defense attorney, a ruthless litigator named Harrison Cole, stood up calmly. "Your Honor, the defense moves to dismiss all charges based on illegal evidence collection. The audio recordings were obtained without my clients' knowledge or consent. Furthermore, the victim, Emily Holloway, has a documented history of emotional instability..."
"Objection!" Lena snapped. "The defense is attempting to use forged medical records created by a physician who is currently under federal indictment for taking bribes from Richard Holloway!"
"Sustained," Judge Prescott ruled sharply, glaring at Harrison Cole. "Mr. Cole, if you present documents signed by Dr. Harrison again in this courtroom, I will hold you in contempt. Call your first witness, prosecution."
"The prosecution calls Emily Castleton," Lena announced.
A murmur ran through the courtroom. Emily took a deep breath, looked at me, and I squeezed her hand softly. "You got this, kiddo," I whispered.
She walked to the witness stand, took the oath, and sat down. Her voice was steady and clear as she detailed every single month of abuse, every threat, and the exact moment she realized her life was in danger.
"They didn't just want my inheritance," Emily said, looking directly at Grant, who flinched and looked down at the table. "They wanted to erase my identity. They wanted to make sure I spent the rest of my life locked away in an institution so no one would ever question where my mother's money went."
Harrison Cole stepped up for cross-examination, his tone sharp and aggressive. "Mrs. Holloway... isn't it true that you voluntary entered into this marriage? Isn't it true that you enjoyed the luxury, the cars, the status?"
Emily looked Harrison straight in the eye, her voice filled with unmistakable strength. "I married the man I thought Grant was. But I escaped the monster he actually is. And no amount of money in the world can buy back what you took from me."
The gallery burst into applause. Judge Prescott slammed his gavel repeatedly, demanding order, but the damage was done. The defense team looked at each other in sheer panic.

Suddenly, Richard leaned over to his lead attorney and whispered frantically. Cole’s face went white. He stood up slowly.
"Your Honor... the defense requests a fifteen-minute recess."
