Chapter 4 - The Snake Bites Back

The news cycle exploded the next morning. The Holloway arrest was plastered across every major news network in the country: "Billionaire Dynasty Collapses in Midnight Raid: Corruption, Kidnapping, and Illegal Conservatorships Exposed."
By noon, the Holloway family fortune was tumbling. Shares of Holloway International sank by thirty percent as the SEC launched an immediate freeze on all corporate assets. But a cornered rat is always the most dangerous, and Richard Holloway was not going to go down without a fight.
Sitting in a private medical ward under heavy police guard, Richard paid his bail—set at an astronomical twenty million dollars—using liquid overseas assets that hadn't yet been seized by the federal government. By 3:00 PM, he was out on house arrest, wearing an ankle monitor inside his secondary penthouse downtown.
I was sitting in Lena Ortiz's office at the Department of Justice, reviewing the digital forensic reports recovered from Emily’s phone app, when my personal phone rang. An unknown caller ID.
I answered, keeping my voice neutral. "Speak."
"You think you've won, don't you, mechanic?" Richard’s voice was venomous, stripped of all its previous aristocratic charm. "You think a few badges and a media spectacle can erase fifty years of power?"
"You're out on bail for five minutes and you're already breaking conditions by calling me, Richard?" I replied calmly, setting the call on speaker while Lena immediately signaled her techs to trace and record.
"Bail is a formality," Richard sneered. "I have resources you can't even comprehend. By tomorrow morning, the key witnesses in this case will disappear or change their stories. The forensic evidence on that server? My cyber team will prove it was doctored using AI software. And your precious daughter? She’ll be discredited as a drug-addicted, unstable gold-digger before this week ends."
"Try it," I said quietly.
"Oh, I won't just try, Frank. I’ve just hired the best private military contractor firm in the country. They aren't cops; they don't care about warrants. You took my son, you ruined my family name, and now I'm going to make sure you watch everything you love crumble."
"Is that a threat, Richard?"
"It’s a promise. Check your front door, old man."
The line went dead.
My eyes snapped to Lena. "Get a unit to my house right now!"
Fifteen minutes later, state troopers arrived at my suburban home. The front door was wide open. The house had been ransacked—furniture flipped, walls smashed—but nothing of material value was taken. Hanging in the center of the living room was a single military-grade tracking device and a photograph of my deceased wife's grave with a fresh red 'X' spray-painted across her headstone.
They were trying to provoke me. They thought that by attacking my personal memories and pushing me into a rage, I would commit a violent crime, ruin my own credibility, and give their legal team the leverage they needed to claim self-defense.
I stood in the middle of my ruined living room, looking at the vandalized photo of my late wife. The rage inside me was a white-hot furnace, but twenty years in military intelligence and public corruption had taught me one fundamental rule: Never fight the enemy on their terms.
I picked up my phone and called a number I hadn't dialed in eight years—a private line to an old friend in Special Operations Intelligence, currently working for the Department of Homeland Security.
"Frank?" a deep voice answered. "I saw the news. What do you need?"
"I need a complete financial lockdown on offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and Liechtenstein," I said, my voice dead calm. "And I need you to activate Protocol Alpha on Holloway International."
"Protocol Alpha? Frank, that’s nuclear. That will trigger an international freeze on all their shell companies within hours."

"They touched Sarah's grave," I said softly.
There was a long pause on the line. "Give me ten minutes. The Holloways won't have enough cash left to buy a bottle of water."
