Chapter 12 - The Shadow Estate

The rain in Maine didn't fall softly; it hit the windshield like handfuls of cold gravel. The private estate of Julian Vance sat deep inside a secluded pine forest near Cape Elizabeth, hidden behind ten-foot iron gates and a thick curtain of security cameras.
Julian Vance was the black sheep of the Vance political dynasty—a former Silicon Valley hedge fund manager who vanished from public view five years ago after being investigated for high-frequency trading fraud. While his brother played judge in the courtrooms, Julian was the digital architect who laundered money for elite families across the East Coast.
I parked my Ford truck half a mile down the muddy access road, killed the headlights, and pulled a heavy black tactical jacket over my flannel shirt. In my coat pocket rested an encrypted frequency jammer—a military-grade device I’d kept from my public corruption unit days—along with a small silenced sidearm.
I breached the perimeter fence through a drainage culvert, moving through the dark woods without making a sound. My military mechanics background gave me an intuitive understanding of structural blind spots; security cameras always leave narrow gaps near power junctions and heavy foliage.
The mansion was a modern glass-and-steel monstrosity built into the cliffside. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the ground-floor study, I saw Julian Vance. He was sitting behind a massive oak desk, wearing a dark suit, surrounded by three large computer monitors displaying live banking transfer feeds.
Standing beside him was a woman whose face made me freeze in the shadow of the pines.
It was Victoria Holloway—Richard’s younger sister and Grant’s aunt. She was supposed to be living in Paris, entirely disconnected from the family scandal. But here she was, holding a glass of cognac, watching millions of stolen dollars cascade across the digital screens.
"How much longer until the Zurich node clears?" Victoria’s voice carried through the open terrace door above the sound of the wind.
"Ten minutes," Julian replied, tapping rapidly on a mechanical keyboard. "Once the final forty million clears the Swiss gateway, the money gets converted into untraceable cryptocurrency keys. By midnight, your brother’s legal defense fund will be fully restored in an offshore trust, and we'll have enough leverage to pay off the federal appeals panel."
"And the Castleton girl?" Victoria asked, her voice laced with pure venom. "The mechanic's daughter who ruined my family?"
Julian smirked, pulling a manila folder from his desk drawer. "The private security team is already in position near her sanctuary. Once the transfer finishes, we trigger the gas leak at the construction site. It will look like a tragic industrial accident. Frank Castleton will spend the rest of his life grieving instead of hunting us."
A cold, lethal silence settled inside my chest. They weren't just stealing money to free Richard. They were planning to kill Emily tonight.
I pulled the electronic frequency jammer from my coat, flipped the primary power switch, and tossed it through the open glass terrace door.
The device landed on the Persian rug with a soft thud, emitting a high-pitched electronic hum. Instantly, all three computer monitors flickered, turned bright red, and displayed a single message: SIGNAL TERMINATED.
Julian jumped out of his leather chair, dropping his glass. "What the hell is that?!"

I stepped through the open terrace doorway into the warm, soft light of the study, dripping wet, holding my weapon low at my side.
"That," I said, my voice dead and cold, "is the sound of your fun ending."
