Chapter 5 - The Gala of Shadows

Z

Three days later, the high society of the city was in absolute chaos. Despite the looming trial and the mounting federal charges, Vivian Holloway attempted to host the annual Grand Diamond Charity Gala at the Metropolitan Hotel—a desperate, pathetic attempt to project normalcy and convince her wealthy socialite peers that the family was still untouchable.

She believed that by parading in front of the cameras wrapped in millions of dollars of diamonds, she could control the narrative and prove that the Castleton accusations were nothing more than a bitter lie from a lower-class family.

What she didn't know was that Emily had officially been discharged from the hospital that morning—and we were coming to the party.

The grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Hotel was stunning. Crystal chandeliers cast soft light over hundreds of guests dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns. Vivian Holloway stood near the center stage, sipping champagne, surrounded by a tight circle of fake friends who were only attending to watch the trainwreck unfold.

Suddenly, the massive double doors of the ballroom swung open.

The entire room fell dead silent.

Emily walked in. She was dressed in a breathtaking midnight-blue evening gown that completely exposed the dark purple bruises on her shoulders and arms—she didn't hide a single mark. She walked with her head held high, her posture regal, looking every bit the brilliant, courageous architect she was. Beside her was me, wearing a crisp dark suit, walking with the quiet, terrifying presence of a veteran who had walked through hell and back.

Vivian turned, her glass freezing halfway to her lips, her face turning pale as paper. "What is... what is she doing here? Security! Remove them!"

"Don't bother, Vivian," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet room.

Emily stepped forward, looking straight into the eyes of the women who used to play high-society games with her abuser. "I'm here to return something you left at the house, Vivian."

Emily pulled a small, silver flash drive from her clutch purse and handed it directly to the master of ceremony's AV technician standing near the main projection screen.

"What are you doing?!" Vivian screamed, dropping her glass of champagne, which shattered on the pristine marble floor. "Stop them! Somebody stop them!"

Before the private security guards could react, the massive 4K screens throughout the ballroom flickered and turned on.

It wasn't video. It was audio—crystal clear, high-definition audio recorded by Emily’s emergency phone app during the night of the charity gala planning three weeks prior.

Vivian's voice echoed through the high-end speakers, loud and sharp:

“Make sure you hit her where the dress covers, Grant. We cannot have bruises on her face before the charity gala. The donors need to see a happy, obedient wife, not a broken doll. Once we get her signature on the trust transfer, we can put her in the facility permanently.”

Then Grant’s laugh echoed across the room:

“Don't worry, Mom. She’s too weak to fight back. Her old man is just a pathetic grease monkey. He won't do a damn thing.”

Gasps erupted across the entire room. Society women covered their mouths in horror. Men turned away in disgust. Vivian stood frozen, her eyes wide with terror, as her elite social circle pulled away from her as if she carried a deadly plague.

"You... you evil little monster!" Vivian shrieked, lunging toward Emily with her manicured nails outstretched.

I stepped in front of her with a movement so fast it was a blur, catching her wrist in mid-air with an iron grip. I leaned in close, so only she could hear my voice.

"Your dynasty is dead, Vivian. And your son is going to federal prison for twenty years."
