Chapter 13 - The Reckoning in the Pines

Julian Vance reached frantically into his desk drawer for a firearm, but I closed the distance before his fingers could touch the wood. I grabbed his collar, slammed his head down against the heavy oak desk with a sickening crack, and swept his legs out from under him. He hit the hardwood floor, groaning in pain, blood pouring from his nose.

Victoria Holloway let out a sharp shriek, dropping her cognac glass as she backed away toward the fireplace, reaching into her leather handbag.

"I wouldn't do that, Victoria," I said without turning around, my gun trained on Julian’s chest as he squirmed on the floor. "Unless you want your name added to the federal indictment before the ambulance arrives."

Her hand froze inside her purse. She stared at me with wide, terrified eyes, the aristocratic composure completely melting off her face. "You... you're just a grease monkey! How did you find this place?!"

"You used my daughter's security passcodes," I said, stepping over Julian to grab her handbag, yank it from her grip, and toss it onto the fire grate. "You thought because you were hiding behind digital walls in the woods that you were safe. But you forgot one thing about mechanics, Victoria."

I pulled the master flash drive out of Julian’s main server tower, severing the physical connection to the Swiss banking gateway.

"We know how to trace where the leak is coming from," I finished.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the study burst open. Two massive security guards armed with tactical shotguns charged into the room.

"Drop it!" the lead guard bellowed.

Before he could pull his trigger, the floor-to-ceiling glass windows behind me shattered into thousands of glistening fragments as flashbang grenades bounced across the hardwood floor. White light and a deafening boom exploded through the study.

The guards dropped their weapons, clutching their ears and eyes in agony.

Through the broken glass frame, Lena Ortiz and a full squad of FBI tactical agents flooded into the room, their rifle laser sights illuminating the smoke.

"FBI! Hands on your heads! Don't move!" Lena’s voice echoed sharply through the ruined study.

Agents slammed the two guards to the floor, while another pair dragged Julian Vance to his feet, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his bloody wrists. Lena walked straight over to Victoria Holloway, who was trembling hysterically in the corner, and pulled her arms behind her back.

"Victoria Holloway," Lena said calmly. "You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and financing a fugitive criminal enterprise."

"You can't touch me!" Victoria screamed, her voice cracking. "I am a foreign resident! My lawyers will have this thrown out by sunrise!"

"Your lawyers are being arrested in New York right now, Victoria," Lena replied, slapping the cuffs shut. "And your Swiss accounts? They've just been permanently seized by Homeland Security."

I walked out onto the rain-slicked terrace, pulling my satellite phone from my pocket, and dialed my home line.

"Dad?" Emily’s voice answered on the second ring, warm and cheerful. "Are you coming back soon? The soup is almost ready."

I closed my eyes, letting the sound of her safe, peaceful voice wash over me, releasing the violent tension in my muscles.

"I'm on my way home, sweetie," I said softly, looking back at the broken estate being stripped by federal agents. "Everything is taken care of."
