Zero nine

Chapter 9

The explosive sound of breaking glass shattered the quiet evening into violent fragments.

Elena screamed, throwing herself onto the floor as wood splinters and razor-sharp glass rained down on the kitchen tiles. In the living room, Lily shrieked in terror, while Adrian instinctively dove over his little sister, covering her body with his own just as he had been taught during those horrific nights in Queens.

Vincent didn't sprint toward the front door; he vaulted over the porch railing, dropping ten feet onto the gravel below, drawing a suppressed 9mm pistol from a hidden magnetic holster beneath the porch floorboards. He never truly trusted the quiet life. He had spent six months preparing for a ghost that might never come, and now the ghost was on his doorstep.

"Elena! The basement hatch! NOW!" Vincent roared, firing three quick rounds toward the tree line at the edge of the driveway.

A figure clad in black tactical gear collapsed out of an oak tree, crashing heavily onto the hood of Elena’s station wagon. But there wasn't just one sniper. Red laser dots suddenly danced across the white wooden facade of the house like a swarm of deadly fireflies.

Four heavily armed mercenaries, wearing night-vision goggles and silenced submachine guns, breached the front perimeter, moving with professional military precision. They weren't Samuel Pike’s sloppy street thugs; these were high-tier European contractors, trained to eliminate targets in seconds.

Vincent ducked behind the stone pillar of the porch as a hail of submachine-gun fire chewed through the wooden walls, turning the picturesque home into a smoking colander of splinters.

Inside the house, Elena crawled across the living room floor, her hands bleeding from glass shards, dragging both children by their collars toward the hallway closet that concealed the reinforced storm cellar entrance.

"Mama, I'm scared!" Lily sobbed, her little hands clutching Elena’s torn sweater.

"Hush, baby! Look at me, look at Lily!" Elena demanded, her voice shaking but her grip like steel. "Adrian, pull the lever inside the closet! Do it now!"

Adrian, his young face pale as chalk, reached inside the dark closet, grabbing a disguised brass coat hook and pulling it down with all his body weight. The floorboards slid back with a heavy metallic click, revealing a concrete staircase leading into a hardened bunker beneath the foundation.

As Elena shoved Lily down the stairs, a mercenary smashed through the French doors of the patio, his weapon raised. He didn't aim at Elena. His barrel swung directly toward Adrian, his eyes locked on the boy's face.

"Target identified! The boy is alive!" the soldier barked into his shoulder comms.

Before the mercenary could squeeze the trigger, Vincent materialized behind him like a phantom born of pure vengeance. Vincent grabbed the back of the soldier's helmet, violently driving his head downward onto the sharp edge of the marble coffee table. The wood cracked, and the man went limp. Vincent caught the falling assault rifle mid-air, spun on his heel, and unleashed a devastating burst down the hallway, dropping two more operatives rushing through the front entrance.

"Get down the hatch!" Vincent shouted at Elena, stepping over the bodies as spent shell casings clattered like rain against the hardwood floor.

Elena pulled Adrian down into the dark bunker, but as Vincent reached to pull the heavy steel door shut, a flashbang grenade landed squarely on the rug in front of him.

BANG.

A blinding white light and a concussive shockwave burst through the living room. Vincent’s vision exploded into pure snow, and an agonizing, high-pitched ringing roared in his ears. He stumbled backward, his knees buckling as his hands clawed uselessly at the air.

Through the blinding haze, a tall, elegant figure stepped through the ruined front entrance, her sleek black trench coat sweeping over the blood-stained rug. Victoria Sterling walked calmly into the room, holding a small, silver pneumatic syringe in her gloved hand.

She stepped over the dead bodies of her mercenaries without looking down, her cold green eyes fixed entirely on the open basement hatch.

"Bring the boy up," Victoria commanded softly to her remaining guards. "And kill the father."
