Chapter 4

The reinforced bulletproof glass of the safehouse's front bay windows shattered under a hail of automatic gunfire. High-caliber rounds chewed through the antique wooden furniture, spraying splinters and drywall dust into the air like a deadly blizzard.
"Down!" Vincent bellowed, diving over the kitchen counter as plaster rained down from the ceiling.
Elena shoved Adrian and Lily into the narrow, reinforced panic closet built behind the pantry, locking the heavy steel door from the inside just as a flashbang grenade detonated in the hallway. The blinding light and concussive roar shook the entire foundation of the house.
Carlo, despite his bleeding shoulder, rolled behind the heavy oak dining table, raising his pistol and firing three quick shots into the entryway. A tactical operative dropped with a heavy thud, his weapon clattering across the hardwood floor.
"They're not here to negotiate, Vincent!" Carlo roared over the deafening noise of gunfire, ejected shell casings pinging off the tile floor. "Samuel brought mercenaries! He wants everyone in this house dead!"
"Except Adrian!" Teresa shouted from behind the overturned couch, ducking as a stray bullet obliterated a porcelain lamp above her head. "He needs the boy alive for the blood scanner!"
Vincent didn't answer. He moved like a shadow through the smoke-filled corridor, catching the second gunman off guard as he breached the kitchen threshold. Vincent grabbed the soldier's rifle barrel, pushed it upward toward the ceiling as a burst went off into the drywall, and drove a combat knife deep beneath the man's tactical vest. The mercenary collapsed without a sound. Vincent ripped the assault rifle from his dead hands, slapped in a fresh magazine, and rounded the corner into the main foyer.
Through the haze of gunsmoke, Samuel Pike stood on the front porch, flanked by four heavily armed guards. His face was twisted into a grotesque, bloody sneer, the left side of his jaw swollen and purple from Vincent’s earlier beating.
"Vincent!" Samuel shouted, his voice amplified through the shattered doorway. "Give me the boy and the key, and I'll let you choose which grave your mother and father sleep in! Continue this foolishness, and I'll burn this entire estate down with your little girl inside!"
Vincent squeezed the trigger, sending a tight three-round burst right through the doorframe. Samuel ducked behind a concrete pillar just in time as dust blasted off the stone.
"You want my son, Samuel?!" Vincent yelled back, his voice echoing fiercely through the burning hallway. "Come inside and take him yourself!"
"Cover me!" Samuel screamed to his men.
Two mercenaries rushed the foyer, throwing tear gas canisters ahead of them. Thick, acrid chemical smoke billowed into the room, stinging Vincent’s eyes and burning his lungs. Coughing violently, Vincent retreated toward the living room, firing blindly into the grey fog.
A heavy hand gripped Vincent’s belt, pulling him sharply behind the stone fireplace. It was Carlo. The old man was gasping for air, his shirt entirely soaked in dark, oxygen-deprived blood from his arterial tear.
"Vincent... listen to me," Carlo wheezed, his grip tightening on Vincent’s leather jacket. "The vault under the altar... it’s not in a bank in Zurich."
Vincent wiped tear-gas burning from his eyes, staring down at his dying father. "What are you talking about?"
"It’s beneath the old St. Jude’s Monastery... in Brooklyn," Carlo whispered, his breath growing shallow and ragged. "The key Adrian has... it opens the primary chamber. But it requires two bloodlines to unlock the master terminal... yours and Samuel’s father’s. That’s why Samuel killed his own father six months ago... he took his father's genetic sequence. He only needs Adrian now to complete the transfer!"
Vincent’s blood ran cold. "Samuel killed his own father?"
"He’s insane, Vinny!" Carlo coughed up a spit of bright red blood, his eyes clouding over. "He doesn't want the money to rebuild the cartel... he wants to trigger the secondary protocol... an automated release of thirty years of political extortion files that will destroy every government official from New York to Washington!"
A sudden flurry of footsteps echoed behind them. Teresa screamed as a hand reached through the smoke, grabbing her by her silver hair and hauling her upright.
"Got the old bitch!" a mercenary yelled.
Before Vincent could shoot, Samuel stepped out of the haze, pointing his sidearm directly at Teresa’s temple.
"Drop the weapon, Vincent!" Samuel barked, his thumb pulling back the hammer with a sickening click. "Drop it now, or your dear old mom finally gets that bullet she avoided twenty years ago!"
Vincent froze, his assault rifle raised, his finger hovering millimeters over the trigger. Behind the fireplace, Carlo pulled himself up, clutching his sidearm with trembling, bloody hands.
"Don't do it, Vinny..." Teresa whispered, staring directly into her son's eyes with heartbreaking peace. "He’s going to kill us anyway. Save your children."
"Shut up!" Samuel screamed, shoving the barrel deeper into her skull. "Open the panic door, Vincent! Bring out the boy!"
Vincent looked at his mother. Then he looked at the steel door of the pantry where Elena and his children were hiding. His heart beat violently against his ribs, every drop of his blood screaming for vengeance.
Suddenly, a loud bang shattered the standoff.
Carlo had stumbled out from behind the stone pillar, throwing his entire body weight into Samuel. The gunshot went off—wildly striking the ceiling—as all three bodies crashed down onto the hardwood floor in a tangle of limbs.
"Run, Vincent!" Carlo roared, pinning Samuel’s gun arm to the ground with his dying strength. "Take them and run!"
Vincent didn't hesitate. He swung his rifle, killing the second mercenary with two shots to the chest, then dashed to the pantry door. He punched in the override code, grabbed the crying Elena, threw Adrian over his shoulder, and pulled Lily by the hand, dragging them through the hidden underground basement exit just as a final, terrible gunshot echoed from the living room above.
