Zero nine

Chapter 11

The room plummeted into a suffocating silence that felt far more dangerous than the hail of gunfire that had preceded it.

Victoria Sterling lowered her cigarette, her sharp green eyes narrowing as she stared at the seven-year-old boy standing amidst the blood and rubble. "What did you say, child?"

Adrian didn't flinch. He reached into his sweater pocket with his free hand and pulled out a small, faded leather-bound notebook—a pocket diary with brass clasps that had belonged to Teresa Moretti.

"Grandma didn't just give me a silver key," Adrian said softly, his voice clear and resonant. "She gave me her words. She told me that if anyone ever came looking for her eyes... it meant the Sterling Syndicate was trying to activate the Omega Protocol."

Victoria’s face went completely drain of color. The icy arrogance that had defined her demeanor crumbled instantly into a look of absolute, sheer terror.

"Where did you get that book?" Victoria demanded, her voice losing its cultured composure, pitching higher into a panicked strain. "WHERE IS THE REST OF IT?!"

Vincent, despite the ringing in his ears, grasped the gravity of the shift immediately. He stepped subtly in front of Adrian, shielding the boy with his body, his eyes locked onto Victoria's trembling hands.

"The Omega Protocol," Vincent said, his mind rapidly connecting the missing pieces of his mother's secret life. "It wasn't a vault of money, was it, Victoria? It wasn't just extortion files."

"Shut up, Vincent!" Victoria shrieked, pointing her gun directly at his head. "Hand me that book! Hand it to me NOW!"

"It’s a kill-switch," Vincent continued, his voice growing stronger, a cold, predatory authority returning to his chest. "My mother didn't just hide from my father and Samuel Pike. She spent twenty years embedded inside your syndicate's financial network. She mapped every single offshore shell company, every numbered Swiss account, every bribe you ever paid to European intelligence agencies."

Vincent looked down at the tiny notebook in his son's hand. "The retinal scan in Adrian’s eye isn't a key to open a vault, Victoria. It's the trigger that broadcasts your entire financial network to the Interpol global task force and the U.S. Department of Justice simultaneously. You didn't come here to steal the key... you came here to destroy it before it automatically executes!"

Victoria’s guards looked at each other in sudden, bewildered hesitation. They were mercenaries paid for a clean extraction, not soldiers prepared to face a global intelligence fallout that would land them all in dark federal sites for the rest of their lives.

"He's bluffing!" Victoria screamed at her men, her knuckles white on her weapon. "Shoot him! Shoot them all!"

"Are you sure about that, Victoria?" Vincent asked smoothly, taking one step forward, ignoring the gun pointed at his face. "Look at the timer on your tablet."

Victoria instinctively glanced down at the tablet in her hand. A small red counter at the bottom of the screen was ticking down rapidly: 00:02:14... 00:02:13...

"The moment my father’s secondary server in Brooklyn burned six months ago," Vincent lied with flawless, terrifying conviction, "it initiated a six-month master countdown. If the dual-retinal authentication isn't verified by an authorized Moretti heir before that clock hits zero, the Omega file broadcasts automatically."

Victoria stared at the red numbers ticking away—00:01:58... 00:01:57... Her chest heaved as panic seized her throat. "No... no, no, no! Carlo wouldn't do that! He wouldn't destroy his own legacy!"

"Carlo didn't set the timer," Vincent said, a dark, victorious smile spreading across his bloody face. "My mother did. And she hated you even more than she hated him."

Victoria looked at Adrian, then at the tablet, her mind breaking under the weight of an inescapable checkmate. If she killed the boy, the timer would run out in less than two minutes, destroying her entire empire and sending her to prison forever. If she spared him, she was at Vincent's mercy.

"What do you want?" Victoria whispered, her voice cracking, her pristine façade entirely shattered.

May you like

Vincent stepped directly into the barrel of her gun, pressing his forehead against the cold steel of the muzzle.

"I want you to call off your snipers," Vincent whispered lethally. "I want you to delete that satellite feed of Elena's family. And then I want you to get on your knees and hand me that tablet."
