Zero nine

Chapter 3

The rain raged on as the SUV cut through the desolate blackness of Upstate New York, finally pulling into the hidden driveway of a sprawling, iron-gated estate buried deep within the pine woods of Hudson Valley. It was a fortress Vincent had bought secretly four years ago under a shell company—a sanctuary designed explicitly for a war he had always anticipated, though never for a battle involving his own ghost of a family.

Inside the compound's heavily fortified living room, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Vincent had forced his father into a heavy leather armchair, wrapping Carlo’s shoulder in a tight tourniquet while Teresa lay resting on an adjacent couch, hooked up to a portable oxygen concentrator he kept in the safehouse pantry. Elena sat at the kitchen island, clutching a warm mug of tea with both hands, watching her two children sleep side-by-side on a nearby sofa, wrapped in a single wool blanket.

"They're finally asleep," Elena murmured, her voice barely a whisper above the crackle of the fireplace. She looked up at Vincent, her dark eyes hollowed by exhaustion and trauma. "They don't deserve this, Vincent. Neither of them."

Vincent stood near the mantle, tossing the small silver key Adrian had given him up and catching it in his palm. The metallic click echoed sharply in the silent room.

"Neither do I," Vincent said coldly, his eyes shifting toward the couch where his mother lay. "Start talking, Teresa. Before I lose what little sanity I have left."

Teresa adjusted her oxygen mask, her ancient, frail eyes glistening in the firelight. She looked at Carlo, who remained grimly silent, staring at the floorboards.

"Twenty years ago," Teresa began, her voice trembling slightly, "your father didn't just run the Moretti family business, Vinny. He formed an alliance with the Pike cartel—Samuel’s father. They built an offshore financial network worth billions. A network built on blood, extortion, and human trafficking."

Vincent’s jaw tightened. "I know about the Pike alliance. That broke down fifteen years ago."

"It didn't break down," Teresa corrected, shaking her head slowly. "I broke it. I discovered that Carlo had signed away the rights to our family's legitimated assets—including the trust funds set aside for you. But worse than that... I found out Samuel Pike was planning to use our family as a shield for a federal sweep. Carlo was going to let them take the fall—and let you take the blame."

Vincent turned his burning gaze onto Carlo. "Is this true?"

Carlo didn't look up, but his jaw twitched violently. "I did what I had to do to keep the family solvent, Vincent. You were young. You didn't understand the scope of the debt we owed!"

"So you let my mother fake her death?" Vincent’s voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.

"She begged for it!" Carlo snapped back, suddenly raising his head, his eyes ablaze with bitter resentment. "She wanted out! She couldn't handle the blood on our table! I staged the car crash in Queens. I paid off the coroner. I buried an empty casket under a marble angel so Samuel Pike wouldn't track her down and kill her to get to me!"

"And what about Adrian?" Elena chimed in, her voice trembling as she stood up from the barstool, stepping into the center of the room. "What about my son? Why did you take him from me the second he was born?!"

Teresa looked directly at Elena, deep sorrow etched into every line of her weathered face. "Because Adrian wasn't just Vincent’s child, Elena. He was born with a blood marker—a genetic key to the encrypted Swiss accounts where the Pike-Moretti billions were hidden. Carlo’s father had designed the security protocol thirty years ago. It required the DNA of a third-generation direct Moretti heir."

The room went deathly still.

Vincent stared at his mother as if she were a total stranger. "You used my unborn child as a digital vault?"

"Samuel found out Elena was pregnant with Adrian," Teresa explained, tears spilling over her wrinkled cheeks. "He was going to kill Elena the moment the baby was born and harvest the blood sample. I intercepted her at the hospital in Maine. I paid the doctors to tell Elena the baby had died at birth, and I took Adrian into hiding with me."

Elena gasped, covering her mouth as a agonizing sob tore from her chest. "You... you told me he died..." She staggered backward, leaning heavily against the island counter. "For seven years... I believed my firstborn was dead... while you were raising him in secret?!"

"I had to protect him!" Teresa cried out. "If Samuel knew he was alive, he would have slaughtered both of you! I raised Adrian as my own grandson in isolation. But then... then Elena became pregnant again. With Lily."

Vincent felt a cold, paralyzing dread creep down his spine. "Lily..."

"Carlo found out about Lily," Teresa continued, glancing at the sleeping five-year-old girl. "He knew Samuel was closing in. So Carlo forced Elena to disappear, hiding her in that Queens apartment, keeping her dependent on medical stipends just to keep her quiet. He threatened to kill you, Vincent, if she ever reached out to you."

Vincent slowly walked over to his father, standing directly over the sitting old man. The shadow of Vincent's towering frame completely swallowed Carlo.

"You threatened to kill me?" Vincent asked, his voice chillingly calm. "To protect a bank account?"

"To protect the legacy!" Carlo yelled, coughing violently as fresh blood seeped through his bandages. "You think you're a saint, Vincent?! You've killed men! You've run this city with an iron fist for five years! Everything you are, I made you! If Samuel gets that vault, the Pike cartel takes over New York completely. They will hunt down Lily, they will hunt down Adrian, and they will butcher Elena in front of you!"

Before Vincent could respond, the security panel on the wall began to beep rhythmically. Red warning lights flared across the ceiling, casting an ominous blood-red glow throughout the room.

The perimeter sensors at the front gate had just been breached.

Vincent rushed to the monitor terminal. The live feed showed three black armored SUVs ramming through the reinforced iron gates, followed by a dozen heavily armed men dressed in tactical gear spilling onto the driveway. Leading them, holding an assault rifle with a blood-soaked bandage wrapped tightly around his jaw, was Samuel Pike.

"They tracked the SUV," Vincent muttered, slamming his fist against the console.

Elena ran to the sofa, pulling both waking children into her arms as the loud wail of the house security alarms began to screech. "Vincent! What do we do?!"

Vincent reached into the side cabinet, pulling out two tactical handguns and throwing one onto the table in front of Carlo.

May you like

"You wanted to defend the legacy, old man?" Vincent said, racking the slide of his pistol with a lethal metallic clack. "Pick up the gun. Because tonight, the Moretti family stops running."
