Chapter 5

The underground passage beneath the safehouse emptied into a dense pine ravine two hundred yards away from the burning main house.
The cold night air slapped Vincent’s face as he shoved Elena and the two children beneath the thick canopy of evergreen trees. Behind them, bright orange flames licked the night sky as the estate exploded into a massive fireball, sending thick plumes of black smoke rolling over the treetops. Samuel’s men had torched the house to destroy the evidence.
Elena collapsed onto her knees in the mud, clutching Lily and Adrian tightly against her chest. She was sobbing hysterically, her body shivering uncontrollably in the freezing rain.
"They're dead..." she wept, looking up at Vincent through wild, mud-stained eyes. "Your father... your mother... they're both gone..."
Vincent stood motionless in the downpour, staring back at the blazing inferno in the distance. His face was an unreadable mask of ice and stone, but inside, his soul felt completely hollowed out. In less than twelve hours, he had found his long-lost love, discovered he had two children, learned his mother was alive, and then watched both of his parents die in a hail of gunfire.
"We don't have time to mourn," Vincent said, his voice flat, stripped of all human emotion. He reached down and pulled Elena to her feet. "Samuel will realize we escaped through the tunnel within minutes. We need to reach Brooklyn before sunrise."
"Brooklyn?" Elena asked, wiping rain and tears from her face. "Why Brooklyn?"
"St. Jude’s Monastery," Vincent answered, taking Adrian’s small hand into his own. The young boy looked up at his father, his gray-blue eyes filled with a terrifyingly mature understanding of the horrors he had just witnessed. "That’s where the final vault is. That’s where this whole curse ends."
They walked three miles through the dense, muddy woods until they reached a small rural gas station on the edge of the highway. Vincent bypassed a parked, rusty pickup truck’s ignition using two wires beneath the steering column, roaring the vehicle to life before loading Elena and the kids into the cab.
The drive to Brooklyn was a silent voyage through hell.
As the truck crossed the Williamsburg Bridge into the borough, the first light of a bleak, grey dawn began to break over the city skyline. New York was waking up, entirely oblivious to the secret war that had consumed its underbelly overnight.
St. Jude’s Monastery was an ancient, crumbling Gothic structure built in the late nineteenth century, sitting quietly squeezed between modern industrial warehouses near the East River docks. Its tall stained-glass windows were dark and broken, its stone walls covered in layer upon layer of rusted iron vines and graffiti.
Vincent parked the truck in an alley two blocks away. He checked the magazine on his remaining pistol—seven rounds left.
"Stay in the truck," Vincent commanded, looking at Elena.
"No," Elena said firmly, grabbing his wrist with a sudden, fierce strength. "I am not letting you out of my sight again, Vincent. Seven years ago, I ran because I thought it would protect you. Look where that got us. We go together."
Vincent looked down at her hand on his wrist, then at Adrian and Lily watching him from the back seat. He nodded once.
They entered the monastery through a subterranean coal chute near the rear courtyard. The interior was freezing, smelling heavily of damp stone, old incense, and decay. Cobwebs hung like tattered shrouds from the vaulted ceilings, and rotting wooden pews lined the long central nave toward the high altar.
Vincent led them down a narrow spiral staircase behind the choir loft, descending deep beneath the foundation of the church into an ancient, stone-walled crypt.
At the end of the crypt stood a massive, round steel door embedded directly into the bedrock—a heavy, industrial vault door that looked shockingly out of place in the centuries-old church. On the center console sat an electronic interface board equipped with a biometric hand scanner and a narrow keyhole matching the pendant around Adrian's neck.
"This is it," Vincent whispered.
He took the small silver key from Adrian’s trembling hands and inserted it into the keyhole. He turned it clockwise. A loud, heavy hydraulic hiss echoed through the crypt as ancient mechanical gears began to turn deep inside the wall.
The digital screen flickered to life, glowing with an eerie blue light.
PRIMARY AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED: HEIR DNA MATCH.
Vincent turned to Adrian. "I need you to put your hand on the screen, son. It’s just going to take a small pinprick. I promise it won't hurt."
Adrian looked at the glowing blue glass, then up at Vincent. "Will this make the bad man go away?"
"Yes," Vincent said softly, kneeling down to look the boy in the eyes. "This ends everything."
Adrian stepped forward and pressed his small palm against the glass scanner. A tiny needle clicked from the center, drawing a single bead of blood. The screen flashed bright green.
SEQUENCE 1 APPROVED. SECONDARY AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED: PIKE MASTER KEY.
Suddenly, a sharp, metallic voice echoed from the dark stairwell behind them.
"And that, my dear Vincent, is where I come in."
Vincent whirled around, pulling his pistol and shoving Elena and the children behind his back.
Samuel Pike walked slowly out of the shadows, flanked by three surviving mercenaries. Samuel held a blood-soaked syringe in his right hand, his eyes gleaming with a psychotic, triumphant madness.
"Did you really think you could outrun me?" Samuel laughed, holding up the syringe filled with dark crimson liquid. "I took this from my father’s corpse six months ago. The Pike DNA. All I needed was your boy to open the gate."
May you like
Samuel pointed his gun directly at Elena’s face. "Step away from the console, Vincent. Or I put a bullet right between her eyes."
