Chapter 6

The air inside the underground crypt froze instantly. The heavy, rhythmic dripping of water somewhere in the stone dark was the only sound accompanying Samuel Pike’s jagged breathing.
Vincent did not move his weapon. The barrel of his pistol remained aimed squarely at Samuel’s chest, though he knew three mercenary automatic rifles were trained directly on his own head.
"You're a sick bastard, Samuel," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, echoing off the damp granite walls. "You killed your own father. You helped murder mine. All for a server full of dead men's secrets?"
"Dead men's secrets?" Samuel laughed, a sharp, unhinged bark that rattled the shadow-draped arches above. "This isn't just secrets, Vincent! This is the blueprint of the entire eastern seaboard! Politicians, federal judges, police commissioners... your father and mine spent forty years keeping them all on a short leash! With this data, I don't just control the cartel... I control the state!"
Samuel gestured violently with his gun. "Now move away from that terminal! Or I swear to God, I'll paint this altar with your girl's blood!"
Elena squeezed Lily against her ribs, her eyes wide with terror, while Adrian bravely stepped slightly in front of his mother, clutching her jeans tightly.
Vincent slowly lowered his pistol, stepping two paces to the left, away from the glowing blue console.
"Smart boy," Samuel sneered. He gestured to two of his mercenaries. "Hold them. If he so much as twitches, blow the mother's head off."
Samuel stepped up to the master terminal, his boots crunching on the ancient gravel floor. He pressed the syringe containing his father’s preserved blood into the secondary authentication port, then pressed his own thumb onto the biometric reader.
The console hummed loudly. A deep, mechanical clunk reverberated through the bedrock beneath their feet as heavy iron locking bolts retracted inside the massive steel door.
SECONDARY AUTHENTICATION APPROVED. OVERRIDE COMPLETE. MASTER DATA TRANSFER INITIATED.
The heavy vault door slowly swung open, revealing a small, lit chamber housing a massive black server rack, pulsing with thousands of green and red LED lights.
Samuel let out a long, ragged breath of pure ecstasy, staring into the room like a madman gazing upon a pile of gold. "Forty years..." he whispered. "Forty years of the Moretti family looking down their noses at us... and now it’s all mine."
He turned back toward Vincent, a grotesque, victorious smile spreading across his bloody face. "You know, Vincent... I promised your father I’d wipe your lineage off the face of the earth once this vault opened. It’s only fair I keep my promises to the dead."
Samuel raised his pistol to execute Vincent.
In that split second, Vincent didn't reach for his gun. Instead, he reached into his tactical jacket pocket and pulled out a small, black detonator with a bright red LED light pulsing on top—a remote trigger he had rigged to the safehouse's backup power cell before it burned.
Samuel’s eyes widened in sudden, jarring confusion. "What is that?"
"My father built the vault, Samuel," Vincent said, a cold, ruthless smile touching his lips for the very first time. "But he was paranoid. He knew someone might force the door open one day. So he built a secondary fail-safe."
Vincent looked directly at the server rack inside the vault. "The moment the master override sequence completes without the Moretti family master key code—which only I know—a thermite charge inside the primary drive array activates."
"You're lying!" Samuel shrieked, his composure completely collapsing into pure panic. "You wouldn't destroy it! The evidence against the Commission—"
"I don't give a damn about the Commission," Vincent snapped.
Vincent pressed the button.
A blinding, white-hot flash ignited inside the vault room. A roaring wave of three-thousand-degree thermite fire instantly consumed the server racks, melting the silicon, metal, and fiber-optic cables into a liquid puddle of molten slag in a fraction of a second. The heat wave blew out of the vault entrance, slamming Samuel backward onto the cold stone floor as he screamed in absolute agony, watching his life's obsession melt into useless ash.
"My data! MY DATA!" Samuel shrieked, scrambling toward the white-hot inferno with his bare hands, his clothes catching sparks.
The two distracted mercenaries turned in shock toward the flaming vault. Vincent seized the fraction of a second opportunity.
He drew his pistol and fired twice—two lethal shots through the foreheads of both mercenaries before they could even pull their triggers. The third guard panicked, dropping his weapon and bolting up the spiral staircase into the darkness above.
Vincent rushed forward, kicking Samuel’s dropped gun across the crypt floor, then grabbed Samuel by his collar, dragging the screaming, half-burned man away from the melting steel vault door.
Vincent slammed Samuel against the stone pillar, jamming the barrel of his gun directly under Samuel’s chin.
"It's over, Samuel," Vincent growled, his thumb pulling back the hammer. "The secrets are gone. The cartel is dead. And so are you."
Samuel wheezed, blood pouring from his lips, but he managed a raspy, insane chuckle. "Shoot me... go on, Vinny... shoot me... you're just like your father... a monster hiding in a suit..."
Vincent stared into the eyes of the man who had tormented his family for seven long years. He felt the cold rage screaming in his mind, demanding blood for Carlo, for Teresa, and for the lost years of his children's lives.
Then he felt a tiny hand reach up, gently touching his leather sleeve.
Vincent looked down. Adrian was standing beside him, staring up with big, wide eyes.
"Don't," Adrian whispered softly. "Dad... please."
Dad.
The word struck Vincent harder than any bullet ever could. The rage inside him suddenly evaporated, leaving only a deep, profound clarity.
Vincent slowly lowered the weapon. He smashed the butt of the pistol hard against Samuel’s temple, knocking the man instantly into cold, dark unconsciousness.
Vincent turned to Elena, pulling her and both children into a tight, fierce embrace as the sirens of the arriving federal authorities finally began to echo from the streets above.

"It's over," Vincent whispered into Elena's hair, feeling her tears soak through his shirt. "It's finally over."
