Zero nine

Chapter 7 - The Paper Trail

By 1:00 a.m. on Christmas morning, we were back at David’s office. The black encrypted flash drive was plugged into his secure server, and a specialized forensic software tool was running a decryption algorithm using the keys found in Patricia’s physical ledger.

The children were fast asleep in David’s private office, exhausted from the long night. Ashley sat next to me, staring at the progress bar on the monitor.

Decryption: 98%... 99%... Complete.

The screen flashed, and a massive directory of files opened up. David clicked on the primary folder labeled Patient Care Protocol: Chloe Monroe Reynolds.

Documents flooded the screen. Medical reports, daily care logs, and invoices stretching back over a decade. But as David scrolled down to the most recent files from 2026, his brow furrowed.

"Wait a minute," David said, zooming in on a medical report dated November 12, 2026—just last month. "Look at the physician's notes."

I leaned closer, reading the translated text from the Swiss doctor.

Patient Chloe Monroe Reynolds has shown remarkable response to the gene therapy trial initiated in 2024. Genetic markers indicate full stabilization of motor neuron function. Patient is no longer require continuous ventilator support and has achieved significant ambulatory milestones.

Ashley gasped, tears pouring down her face. "She’s... she’s walking? She’s getting better?"

"Yes," David said, his voice trembling slightly. "But look at the next line, Ashley."

Recommendation: Patient is fully cleared for discharge to parental custody. Continued outpatient therapy is recommended, but specialized institutional care is no longer medically necessary.

The room went completely silent.

"If she was cleared for discharge last month," I whispered, the horror of the realization washing over me, "why did Patricia tell us tonight that moving her would kill her? Why did she keep her locked away in Switzerland?"

"Because if Chloe was discharged and came back to the United States," David explained, his eyes blazing with anger, "the legal guardianship would automatically face review. Ashley would have the right to claim her daughter back. And if Ashley got her daughter back, she would discover that the trust had been using Chloe’s medical status to justify massive tax write-offs and fraudulent offshore capital allocations totaling over forty million dollars."

David clicked on another sub-folder labeled Financial Allocations – Project Alpha.

A series of accounting ledgers appeared. Every year, the Reynolds Trust had claimed a five-million-dollar charitable and medical care exemption for an "incapacitated dependent." But the actual invoices from the Saint Jude Clinic were only three hundred thousand dollars a year. Patricia and Marcus had been using their own hidden, sick daughter as a massive, illegal tax shelter to hide forty-seven million dollars in undeclared corporate profits.

"They didn't hide her to save her," Ashley said, her voice dropping to a horrifyingly calm whisper. "They hid her to rob the government and protect their money. They kept my daughter in a cage for ten years for a tax write-off."

"It’s corporate fraud, embezzlement, tax evasion, and conspiracy," David said, shutting his laptop with a sharp click. "This isn't a family court matter anymore, Kesha. This is a federal criminal indictment."

Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the table. It was a new message from the unknown number.

Unknown Number: You have the financial fraud proof now. But you still don't know the whole truth. Look at the marriage license folder on the drive. Look at the signature witness.

David quickly reopened the laptop and navigated to a folder labeled Marital Records – Historical. Inside was a scanned copy of the marriage certificate from the Nevada chapel where Marcus and I had been wed nine years ago.

I had signed it. Marcus had signed it. But I had never looked closely at the legal witness signature at the bottom—the chapel employee who had validated the ceremony.

The signature read: Veronica Vance.

David froze. "Vance? As in... Judge Harrison Vance?"
