Chapter 5 - The Firstborn Shadow

By 8:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve, David’s office was a war room. Cardboard pizza boxes and half-empty coffee cups littered the desks, surrounded by printouts of financial statements and corporate hierarchies. Ashley had refused to leave, sitting cross-legged on a chair, watching David decipher the latest text message tip.
"The M.B. Memorial Fund," David said, pointing at a line of code on his monitor. "The whistleblower was right. Patricia is attempting to move twelve million dollars from a private domestic account into a shell company registered in Grand Cayman. The transfer is scheduled to clear at midnight."
"Can we block it?" I asked, holding a sleeping Noah in my arms while Olivia and Caleb played a silent game of cards in the corner.
"If I file a standard injunction, it won't be seen by a judge until after Christmas," David explained. "But... because Judge Vance appointed a special master this morning, I can flag this specific transaction as an attempt to hide personal assets related to the fraud claim. The special master can intercept the funds and place them into a court-controlled escrow account."
"But if the funds are intercepted into escrow," Ashley said, her voice rising in panic, "they won't reach Switzerland by the 30th! Chloe will still be at risk!"
"Not if we legally redirect the escrow specifically to fund the medical contract," David said, a brilliant smile breaking across his tired face. "If we prove to the special master that Patricia is using an illicit shell company to pay a critical medical bill for a biological child of the respondent, the court can order the payment made directly from the escrow to the Saint Jude Alpine Clinic, bypassing Patricia entirely. It completely neutralizes her leverage over you, Ashley."
"But we need proof of the contract," I pointed out. "We need the account number for the Swiss clinic and the specific patient ID for Chloe."
Ashley shook her head helplessly. "I don't have it. I haven't seen an official bill in ten years. Patricia’s assistant handled everything."
Suddenly, my phone rang. It wasn't a text this time. It was a call from the unknown number.
I looked at David, who immediately connected a recording device to the phone line and nodded for me to answer. I put it on speaker.
"Hello?" I said.
"Kesha," a woman’s voice came through the line. It was distorted through a voice-changer app, sounding metallic and unnatural, but the urgency was unmistakable. "The special master won't be enough. Patricia is already authorizing a second, physical backup plan. She keeps the original Swiss contract and the decryption keys for the 'Project Alpha' ledger in a secure safe inside her private residence at the Reynolds estate."
"Who are you?" I demanded. "Why are you helping us?"
"Because Patricia Reynolds destroyed my life twenty years ago, just like she’s destroying yours," the voice said bitterly. "If you want to save Chloe, and if you want to ensure your own children’s future, you need those original documents tonight. The security guards at the estate have been dismissed for the Christmas holiday, except for the main gate. The side entrance to Patricia’s private study is accessible via the rose garden. The code to the keypad is 10-14-13."
Ashley gasped. "That’s Chloe’s birthday."
"Patricia is a creature of habit and arrogance," the voice continued. "She uses dates she thinks she owns. The safe inside the study is behind the oil painting of the family crest. The combination is 24-07-16."
My breath hitched. "That’s... Caleb’s birthday."
"She tracks her assets by the dates she successfully eliminated them," the voice said, a chilling edge to the distorted tone. "Go tonight. Before she realizes her Cayman transfer has been flagged. If you don't get those papers, her lawyers will find a way to delete the digital evidence by Monday."
The line went dead.
The room fell into a heavy, stunned silence. We all looked at each other, the weight of what we were being asked to do pressing down on us.
"It’s a trap," David said immediately, shaking his head. "Breaking and entering onto a secured estate on Christmas Eve? If you get caught, Kesha, Patricia will have you arrested for burglary. It will completely invalidate your standing in family court. You could lose custody of your children."
"But if we don't go," Ashley said, looking at me with desperation, "if those papers disappear, my daughter stays a secret forever. And Patricia keeps her frozen."
I looked at my children. Caleb was staring at me, his eyes wide. He walked over and took my hand. "Mama, if there's another kid out there who needs help, we have to help her. Dad left us, but we have each other. She has nobody."
Looking at my son's brave, honest face, I made my decision.
"We aren't going to break in," I said, turning to David. "The judge granted us an emergency asset execution order last night, didn't he? It was for the mansion, but did it include the private residence on the estate property?"
May you like
David’s eyes lit up as he realized what I was suggesting. He pulled out the signed order from Judge Vance. "The order specifies 'all connected properties, outbuildings, and residential structures owned by the Reynolds Family Trust.' The private residence is legally owned by the trust."
"Then we aren't burglars," I said, a fierce smile spreading across my face. "We are just executing a lawful court order to secure evidence. And we’re taking the police with us."
